Junkie In The Trunk - Issue 2 - 4Q 2008 PART 3 - BT MERC VEST
More Accessories...
Bottle Pouch (MSRP $15.95)
Bottle Pouch. Bottle Pouch. Where do you store your 16/20 oz/HPA tank and attach your remote line to feed your marker of paintball annihilation? Bottle Pouch. Bottle Pouch. Mounts horizontally or vertically to the vest. Bottle Pouch. Bottle Pouch. Big enough to fit a monster 114/45 tank! Bottle Pouch. Bottle Pouch. Bungee straps to keep your tank from diving off your vest.
Usefulness Factor – Simple. You run a remote or not. (Oh yeah, can’t forget the .000001 percent of players that carry an extra tank on the field.)
Dead Weight Factor – Again, it’s a matter of whether or not you use a remote line.
Tactical Holster (MSRP $20.95)
Universal Holster (MSRP $20.95)
Thigh Rig (MSRP $26.95)
The two holsters and the Thigh Rig are specialized accessories that fit the mold of that special player who loves Rambo movies and camping in 20 degree weather. He’s the Pistolero; the guy with no fear; “that crazy guy!” Yes, the pistol carrying player. From a Delta 68 or a Tiberius, to the player that feels the need for a backup, these pieces will fit your way of playing. The Tactical Holster is specifically made for use with the Tiberius pistol and the Universal is, well... Universal. PT Extreme, ZEUS, Delta 68 and more.
The Universal has elastic 12 gram holders on the side of it to supplant your gas supply. Both have secure closures, with the Tactical having a snap strap and the Universal having a Velcro strap. Both of these babies have MOLLE straps on the back side of them so you can secure them directly to your vest OR...
...to the Thigh Rig. That’s right, the Thigh Rig is specifically made to strap to your thigh and mount either of the holsters to it and free room up on your vest. And you don’t have to use the rig for holsters. If you don’t feel the need for a pistol, you can mount any MOLLE based accessory on the rig. Pod holders, pouches, etc. Strap it on and swagger away!
Usefulness Factor – Medium. (Combined) This is another case of choice. If you carry a pistol and want the increased flexibility of this holster/thigh rig, then you are deep in the ball park. If you don’t have room for any more pod storage on your vest and want to add the Thigh Rig for extra pod storage, see the man at the booth so they can put you in the side show! Heavy duty!
Dead Weight Factor – High, if you use it. Pistol rigs can be bulky. The positive here is that the holsters mount tight to the vest and eliminate some of the shimmy-shake you get when running full speed down a hill in the direction of some interlopers. With the Thigh Rig that benefit could diminish. Nil, if you don’t. It’s that whole choice thing again.
Pod Holders
One of the most flexible and useful accessories that BT has for the Merc Vest is the selection of Pod Holders. The basic 2 Pod Holder is just that. Just like all three of the holders, it has MOLLE snap straps and Velcro for mounting to the vest, (or the Thigh Rig), and it can also mount on the front of the 2 + 3 Pod Holder. All three of the holder units close with a fabric strap with a rubber “BT” embossed pull tab. Each unit has fabric with plastic reinforcement pod holders. The plus units have additional elastic strap pod holders to compliment the base holders. The elastic straps have an elastic loop and Velcro to pull them out or keep them tucked between in the same manner you find with typical pod setups. The 2 + 3 unit also has MOLLE straps sewn to the front of them so you may attach other MOLLE equipped accessories to it. It is most intended for attaching a 2 Pod Holder to the front of it.
Usefulness Factor – High. Pod holders are one of those necessary items. With most players who wear a vest, carrying paint is probably the biggest requirement. BT gives you a multiple choice advantage with their system. Mounting them is easy and you can pick and choose the size and configuration that suits your style of play. The MOLLE straps on the front of the 2 + 3 unit give the Gorilla factor a high five. Pods on top of pods! Two 2 Pod or 2 + 3 Holders on the back of your vest give you a typical setup. Front or back mounting gives you more paint and more flexibility. And if you’re not happy with the setup, pull the straps and reset your entire rig.
Dead Weight Factor – “To da moon, Alice!” The paint carrying potential of this vest is enough to tire you out in an hour or less. I normally carry no more than four pods on the field because I am old and broken. With the distribution of pods on this vest I was able to carry 5-6 pods and like the abuse it gave me! Where, and how much paint to carry, is the wearer’s choice. The only realistic restriction is the number of pod holders you can attach.
The only perceived shortfall I could find with the vest was with the pod holders. None of the holders have elastic in the securing straps. If you run 160 round Dye Lock lid pods, it’s a bit hairy trying to get a good and comfortable section of hook to loop on the Velcro fasteners. A small section of heavy elastic sewn somewhere in the flap section would make this a much easier task.
