The Cell : Scenario Paintball at it's smallest unit.

Introducing the cell. No this isn't a Hollywood movie, it’s not a bee hive, or a blood analysis. The cell is the smallest effective unit of paintball players you can have on the scenario paintball field.

What makes a cell? A cell could be composed of two or more players, no greater than 4 or 5 members.

What happens when you have more than 6 players together?
Divide them up into equal cells. Say for instance you have 6 players available to you, have each cell consist of 3 players.

How do we address each cell on the field? Give each cell a name such as: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, echo, etc. This works extremely well when communication is needed between the cells. If everyone knows they are on Bravo cell, they will perk up when called for. This is also a great rally tool. If you need to round up your cell between games, or reinserts, just yell your cell name "Bravo!" and watch as your mini team responds.

Why break up into cells, why can't everyone just run together? Because, your game isn't a mad dash to a prized barrel of fruit. The game asks for coordination, working together as a unit, communication, and some team skills. One of the most basic moves in paintball is the flank. If one cell of four members suppresses the enemy in front of them, what is there for the next cell to do? Flank, right? Cells add to coordination. It gives players small objectives in a bigger agenda.

So I have to run with the same people over and over again? That the good part of being in a cell. By running with your mates over and over again, you get to know each others methods of play. You can count on each others skills and know what they are. If you’re in constant rotation with new players, the newness of each set may wear thin, and you’re left with less cohesion as a team. Yes you should swap out some, but try to stay with your cell, you might enjoy the bond that forms.

Does this just apply to Scenario Paintball? No, it can be applied to recball, outlaw paintball, and speedball.

To hear more about cell formations check out CAG Paintball. They will be running a one day course in TN and AL this fall.

While your concept of a cell is great, I think two is too small to be effective. 4 minimum 6 to 8 normal 12 for a special unit would be more effective as our military has decided for years. You are definitly right that there will sometimes be 50 players in the field each with their own agenda, which accomplishes nothing but a lot of noise.

Organized those players would have much more fun and accomplish far more.

Bat- You are correct. For scenario games, it wouldn't be effective to break up a four man cell into two man cells. My mind was stuck in the idea that it could be applied to smaller games(like rec play), but my title suggest scenario games. I have learned this year not to pit myself against incredible odds, unless I feel like playing some odd game and putting myself in the reinsert process.

Your concept of the small organized group is great. If players would form these when the come to the games, they would have a lot more fun, get more accomplished, and make missions more interesting. By the way they would also make new and continuing friends for future game. KEEP THESE GOOD THOUGHTS GOING!
