Okay here I go. I've been wanting to gather togather and share technical paintball information and personal opinions for quite awhile. Most of this information is going to be "HOW I DO IT" or "MY WAY" or IMO. If you do not like what I say or want to commment, you can go ahead and submit a comment and if I like your way or what you say, I'll post it, if not I trash it.

More to follow soon.

P.S. I'll not trash opinions that do not agree with me only those that are flaming, make no sense or not topic related.

Regulator Basics

What is a Regulator?

A Regulator is a device which controls the output pressure of the gas power source. The Regulator can only maintain or reduce the pressure of the gas coming from the source tank - It cannot increase the pressure.

What use is a regulator?

There are several uses for a regulator.

1. Drop your gas power source pressure to a level your system can use. An example is a High Pressure Air tank, they can range in internal pressure from, typically for paintball, 3000 psi to 5000 psi and even a high pressure gun like the Automag utilizes pressure around 1000 psi for operation. You need the bottle regulator to drop the bottle pressure to a useable level. Other paintball guns are low pressure guns and operated sometimes as low as 180 psi and there is a myriad of nominal operating pressures for different guns.

2. Provide a stable and consistent output pressure for your gun to operate off. The more stable your gun’s source of pressure and volume the more consistent your velocity is going to be and that helps lead to more accuracy and shot repeatability.

3. Ease of velocity adjustment. Many times player will add a regulator to their gun to give them and external method of adjusting their velocity. This makes choreographing you gun easier.

4. Prevent liquid CO2 from getting into your gun. Some will work for this, others do not do it well and it is not what a regulator is designed to do.

Regulators can only maintain an output pressure lower than its’ input pressure. This is typically a 35 to 50 psi minimum drop for most typical regulators used in paintball. Regulators can not raise pressure higher than their air source, they come in many different styles and typically are either suited for regulating a high pressure source [> 400 psi] or a low pressure source [< 400 psi]. Be leery of any regulator that is “suited for all pressure ranges. They may “work” but doubtfully does either well.
