The History of Paintball (Part 2)

Twelve men assembled for the first paintball game back in 1981. On 80 acres of wooded land, using pistols designed for marking trees and cattle, Bob Gurnsey, Hayes Noel and Charles Gaines were about to make history. That, most certainly, is not the end of the story; in fact it is just the beginning.

Immediately, Players began design modifications to their Nelspot 007 pistols and by 1983, there were home made versions of silencers, barrel extensions, gravity fed hoppers and even compressed air cylinders that could be pumped up. By 1985 there were commercial paintball fields in Canada, England and Australia, as well as the U.S.

The next 5 years saw huge advancements in marker technology by companies such as Tippmann, who invented the pin valve for CO2 tanks and chose not to patent, advancing the use of bulk CO2 cylinders as the standard propellant for all marker brands. Tippmann is also credited with the first fully automatic marker, the SMG-60. This marker was originally introduced in 1986.

In 1988, the IPPL (International Paintball Players Association) was formed to promote safety and the advancement of the sport. The same year, speedball is introduced and generates an instant fan base.

Nitrogen is introduced as a propellant in 1991 by Air Gun Designs. The system included a fiberglass tank and was never marketed because of industry resistance due to the potential danger associated with the high pressure it required. However as we all know, nitrogen and HPA are common today; this early introduction was later developed and is now the preferred gas propellant.

In 1995, paintball is picked up by ESPN with the airing of the World Championship Games held in Orlando Florida. The same year paintball is spotlighted on national TV again, unfortunately this time it is a newscast highlighting a video tape of a drive by shooting in which paintball markers were used. Legal issues and issues around the potential misuse of the equipment have haunted the paintball industry since inception. Players and enthusiasts rallied around safe and appropriate use of markers as a result of this incident.

Walmart along with other big box retailers get into the paintball business in 1998 selling low end equipment and helping to bring paintball to the mainstream consumer. Also, the same year was our introduction to the agitating hopper. We have come along way since the first design, incorporating eyes and sound activation for battery conservation. There are many designs to choose from today, as well as force fed electronic loaders.

In 2003, Smart Parts shocked the world with a newly designed tournament marker appropriately named The Shocker. Heavily patented, Smart Parts receives much criticism from the industry and there were many lawsuits filed between manufacturers as a result. The same year, Tippmann introduces the flatline barrel, this simple technology allows a paintball to travel further by putting a backspin on the ball, this is achieved by giving the barrel a slight upward curve.

Greg Hastings, a tournament player, designs a video game for Xbox. The game “Tournament Paintball” was released in 2004 and steadily gained popularity among gamers. Later a sequel to the game appears on store shelves.

These are some of the more interesting highlights of advances in the sport over the last quarter of a century. It was not my intention to include everything step by step. If there is something that you feel is significant that I have missed, please comment.

Originally the sport was considered as a tactical military simulation. Although this concept has survived the evolution of the sport, we have also seen it branch out into other areas such as speedball and other fast paced arena games. Tournament speedball is much more television friendly than other forms of the game and has subsequently received a lot of attention as a result. Arena games that showcase sharpshooters are only a small part of the big picture as well. Military simulation games and other scenario games offer a different kind of rush entirely and events can include thousands of participants. Each individual should decide where he or she fits in to the sport of paintball and which aspects of the game they like and succeed in. Try it all (if you dare) and keep an open mind to the future of this great sport.

The History of Paintball

Developed by the Nelson Paint Company in the 1950's, the first paintball guns were manufactured for the forestry service to mark trees in the U.S. Later this idea was adopted by cattle ranchers to mark their cows.

It wasn't until 2 decades passed when in 1976, Hayes Noel (a stock broker) and Bob Gurnsey were discussing a recent trip that Bobs' friend, Charles Gaines had taken to Africa and his (Charles') experiences hunting buffalo while there. Through this conversation between 2 friends and the inspiration of Richard Connells' book entitled "The Most Dangerous Game", paintball as a sport was about to emerge.

After a year and a half contemplating the subject, the idea of using pistols that could propell paint was introduced to the men by a mutual friend of theirs named George Butler. George showed the men a catalog photo from an agricultural magazine, the photo was of a Nelspot 007 marker.

Three more years past and it was on June 27, 1981 when twelve players assembled for what was to be the first round of paintball. They used 80 acres of woodland and they called the game "Survival". They made rules that were similar to the modern game commonly referred to as "Capture The Flag".

Among those in attendance was Bob Jones (a writer for Sports Illustrated at the time). Bob Jones wrote an article about the game and interest developed steadily. Bob Gurnsey, soon after, formed a company called the National Survival Game and entered into a contract with the Nelson Paint Company for distribution of paintball equipment. He made a profit within 6 months.

Paintball has evolved greatly since 1981, the original paint used was oil based and in order to get it off after a game they would have turpentine parties where players actually bathed and scrubbed in a tub of turpentine. Many manufacturers joined this lucrative new market and paintball technology gradually improved to what we see today.

PB2X appears to be changing for the...

Yeah, PB2X appears to be changing for the dot-dot-dot. The future appears uncertain. I've been on hiatus from the magazine for a few months. My fiancee has had some medical problems we've been dealing with. When I decided I was ready to come back, there was a distinct absence of replies to any e-mails I sent. I won't speculate as to why. I began to commnicate with Cheryl Amaya, the publisher.

This culminated in our meeting in Atlanta this past weekend. It has become no secret that PB2X is eliminating the "What the Locals Do" columns and replacing them with a different format local report.

It looks to be a total of two pages per region. One page has the calendar for the area on the left vertical side; the right vertical section is made up of small advertisements running horizontally from to to bottom. The other page is split in two, horizontally, and has a "featured field" and a "featured store" to take up the two sections.

If my memory serves me right, she said that there would be TEN different geographical areas. The new format does not allow for general reporting, team news, scenario results, local photos, editorial pieces and anything else that fit into the "Locals" column.

I understand that several other writers have left the magazine. I can't confirm or dispute this. I have agreed to submit periodic features at this time and see how it goes. I do know that my friend, Bea Youngs, has left PB2X and taken the Editor-in-Chief position at Paintball Sports Magazine. Currently, Bea and I are working on something that would bring me to PSM, too. She is a fantastic person and I feel certain that she'll bring a very cool light to PSM. I'm also contributing to RECON. And don't forget right here on Junkie! (This didn't mean I was totally leaving PB2X!)

I don't know what's going to happen with PB2X. I've with them since 2002. There are questions that can only be answered after time passes. How are the locals going to get their info in? Currently, that looks like it isn't going to happen at all. That's unfortunate. Is the flip book going to continue, (YES IT IS!) since the "Locals" and rec ball stuff is going to be trimmed?

I guess we'll see. I hope things turn out well. We don't need to lose a magazine that used to cater to the local/rec-ball player more than others. I've seen the new format and I'm eager to see what the entire package brings.

In any case, I still take my writing seriously. Editorializing is my favorite form. I'll continue to do it here and wherever I can.

Thanks for all your support over time. I repeat myself by saying that Rec Ball and Scenario play is the best kind of paintball. It is the core of the sport and where almost every single player begins, though it still gets the stiff arm more than anything else. 2007 brought incredible advances in some areas. in some areas it slipped. In an case, I'm still here. And feel free to throw your opinion or idea my way. Thats how we get things done.

In an case, I'm still here. And feel free to throw your opinion or idea my way. Thats how we get things done.

*_by RUFU$ -*ADC Brigadier General Chris*_*

*_Oklahoma Dday 2008 _*
_*4th Infantry Division*_
Still one of the newest units at Oklahoma Dday in only its third year, the 4th Infantry Division will be hitting the hardest beach, Utah Beach. In both previous years, the 4th Infantry Division has taken its beach. In '06, they were the only beach unit to gain any points, and last year, took the beach in under an hour. We will once again be close to 400 people in total this year with tank support and the navy to support us on our beach. We will also have support from the 101st Airborne, 82nd Airborne, and the sniper units.
We are looking for individuals, family's, teams, or just about anyone from speedballers to seasoned and new woodsball players. This year is our most organized, we have a very experienced command staff, and are ready to fight our way up the hill even quicker this year than last.
This unit is commanded by Farris from Georgia, and myself from Texas, with two regiments including heavy gunners, fast chargers, and support groups with anti tank and heavy equipment. Lots of changes have been made this year in this unit, and we are looking forward to a repeat victory.
The navy unit on our beach, will be laying down our main suppression fire with un-contestable force. The Allied tanks will start from this area and will give us cover while we open the road for them to proceed to the rest of the field, where they will rain havoc on the German forces.
So come join the 4th ID at Oklahoma Dday this year in 2008, the biggest and the best.

_Objectives_
Land at Utah Beach and secure a beachhead there. Eliminate German resistance in your sector and proceed inland to link up with elements of the 101st Airborne to secure Causeway #2 to advance the armored forces of the U.S. 3rd Armored Division.
You will be securing the northern flank of the invasion. SHAEF G-2 (Intelligence) reports Utah Beach is defended by German 709th Infantrie-Division. SHAEF G-3 (Operations) plans for the 4th ID to hit the Tare Green and Uncle Red sectors of Utah Beach with both the 8th and the 12th Infantry Regiments, accompanied by the 899th Blackcats Tank Destroyers.
Move inland with the 3rd Armored Division and secure the Causeway#2 then link up with the US Airborne, French Resistance and Free French No. 10 Commandos.
Once the beachhead at Utah and the access of Causeway #2 is secure, you will proceed inland under direction of the Allied Command to secure other objective areas. G-2 (SHAEF Intelligence Office) reports elements of the 91st Luftlande-Division are stationed at the Airfield, with other unknown supporting units. Expect the heavy presence from the German 21st Panzer Division and German Anti-Tank forces in your area.

Frances Townsend, assistant to the president for Counterterrorism and Homeland Security, will depart at the end of the year.

It has been months since she admitted that Pakistan was a safe haven for Al Qeada.:stunned

US attacks on Al Qeada training camps in Pakistan is still zero.

If any US troops feel bashed by this blog post, I am truly sorry.
