He doesnt pay for anything...we are in debt bad right now so he is pretty much like "screw you josh, go to college and do good or i will kill you". i hate when parents want you to be something more than them when the kids are perfectly fine living a modest middle class life.

The older you get, the more you realize that these old people know what they are talking about. Experience is king, and they have lived through more than you and I.
The road I took after high school was the Navy. I spent 6 years there, as an electronics technician. Sure, the equipment isn't quite as high tech as they make it out to be in the recruiting commercials, but I learned how to be a technician, and once again, experience is king. I got out this past July, and picked up a job with Nextel (Sprint now, we merged). I make a good living, and I have yet to take one college course. I believe I make more money than my friends who did go, and are still going to school.
That said, I do plan to start taking courses at night, just to learn a few things. If you have a chance to go, I reccomend that you do take the college route. You can always drop out and join the military if it doesn't work out.
The military is not for everyone, it has it's good times and bad times. As a marine or army member, you would typically be more of a soldier role, exchanging fire with the insurgents.
There are jobs in the Navy and Air Force that are more technically oriented, and would position you for a job after you complete your enlistment, however long you serve. Keep in mind that unless you plan on making a career out of the service, you need to have something to do afterwards.
Life as a fire fighter isn't easy either. I have a couple of friends doing that, to get through the academy, there is a good bit of studying and hard work involved.
But the beauty of life is the ability to make your own way. Before you decide which path to take, do some research and see where they ultimately lead. Find people that have done these things, talk to them, and see if their experiences are something you would like to go through yourself.
Either way, don't use "I'm dumb" as an excuse. I never thought I could understand electronics in high school, and now I get paid good money to maintain complex communications systems.
Find out what you like to do, then chase that, because if you hate your job, life will be harder.
Good Luck!

Josh

It sounds like you have two parents who care for you.

You dont have to worry about where your getting your next meal.

College is very much in the picture.

You are among a very small minority in this world. Be glad and make the most of it.

no they are worse except they spend 6 months in iraq when the army spends 1 yr + in iraq. Not saying there is anything wrong w/ maries but i dont go for the whole boat thing But if i would of had a choice out of hs i would of gone to college. Knowing what i know now i would of went to college even w/o money u can still go w/ loans or finical aid As long as u think about what u are doing before u do u might not regret it later.

Please take this for what it is worth….

Being “satisfied” with living any income bracket as a child is not being satisfied at all. Why? Because you are not actually paying your own way, let alone working for that money.

Let me explain…. When you work 40-60 hours a week to make the middleclass tax bracket (and sorry, few young adults make that bracket out of school, they take years to reach that) and then see you have nothing left after paying bills, it is not so satisfying as when you were living with Mom and Dad.

Also take into account that your parents didn’t make what they are making now when they started out. It took them a lifetime to get to the place they are now. It is kind of like watching the TV commercial about the retired couple who “have it made” and then they switch gears and tell you how it REALLY was getting there.

It sounds like your parents want you to have a stronger base to jump out from, which will then make your rise even easier. This is a good thing if you think about it. While making lower amounts of money may seem fine and well now, it falls flat when you have a family and children of your own. And even having a college education is no guarantee that you will make good money. Plenty of College Grads end up flipping burgers, and then supervising all the non-grads. So why short change yourself right out of the gate?

As for the military….. if you decide to go that route make sure you get what YOU want out of it. The military could care less about you past what they can get FROM you. And this comes from someone who believes strongly in the military and actually served.

But whatever you decide to do, do it with all your heart. Be the best “whatever” you can be. I know that I would have more pride in any of my children who were happy and good at what they chose to do for a living than if they made more money and were mediocre as well as unhappy. Do not confuse this with me saying that being poor and happy is the way to go though, because it isn’t what I am saying. Financial stresses can really hurt people emotionally… TRUST me. And there is nothing that says that you can’t be rich and happy as easily as you can be poor and happy. So go for rich.
