Should you be afraid to fly?

I thought I would let you folks know how the government treats their employees. Just remember, the next time you are flying the controller talking to your plane may be dropping of carbon monoxide poisoning and the government wouldn't care. BTW, this is just one of several cases of issues like this.

Hmmm, I am afraid to fly in the first place.

I wonder if they have a back up center they could have switched over too. I work for a county 9-1-1 center, and we have a back up we can use if our center becomes unsafe. You would think the FAA would as well.

Well, it actually wasn't a center, but rather a tracon. They are the ones that handle aircraft typically within 60 miles or so of the busier airports in the nation. i.e. NY, Dallas, LA, etc. and below 15,000 feet or so. The centers, which control aircraft outside of these areas, have procedures for taking over the airspace and controlling aircraft into and out of the airports. Granted flights would have been drastically reduced, but it still would have been safer than risking the chance of a controller passing out on position, or even worse and entire crew passing out on position, while talking to multiple airplanes.
What I found really scary was the controller's interviews where they were describing what was going on. One of they guys said he was in such a daze that he would do something, talk to another airplane, and then not be sure what he had done or if he had cleared an aircraft for an approach.

Trust me, I drive whenever I can. I have been known to drive from Charleston to South Dakota rather than flying. Actually, since I quit my job in Antarctica I haven't flown at all. I may take a chance when I go to Norway, unless someone builds a bridge. Then it will be another road trip.
