the barrel on these phantoms (stock from CCI) seems to be quite accurate, are these stiffi's and the others mentioned an upgrade in accuracy than what I already have or just a little quiter?

The new ANS Barrels are said to be very accurate.

There are numerous factors that come in to play;
1. Outside diameter of the paintball. (which includes seams)
2. Inside diameter of the barrel.
3. Temperature.
4. Humidity
5. Length or the barrel (but only moderately)
6. Whether or not the barrel is 1 or 2 stages
7. Porting (venting) of the barrel
8. Viscosity of the paintball shell.
9. Friction within the barrel.
10. Pneumatic disbursement (air through the bolt)
11. Firing from Open or Closed bolt.
12. Structural integrity (and polarity trueness) of the paintball shell.
13. Recovery time (how long it takes for a paintball to recover back to "round" after leaving the muzzle.
14. Weight of the paintball.

Confusing, huh?? Try this. Get your barrel and match up the paint by dropping it in to the bore end (if it goes all the way through, paint is too small. If it sits on the barrel entrance(like a snow cone), paint is too big. If the paint drops in to the barrel about an inch or 2 and you can blow it out, perfect. Remember to watch the temperature. Later in the day as it gets warmer (or cooler) you might want to adjust the back (or insert) or the barrel to properly fit the paint. Too cold and the shells get more brittle, more hot and humid, the shells get "spongey".

Closed bolt guns typically shoot farther and straighter. Spinning a paintball doesn't generally make it go straighter. Flatlines and "rifled" barrels spin the ball; the more a ball is spun, the longer it takes to "recover" (item 13). When a paintball leave the muzzle, for a split second, it's almost an inch long. The sooner it "recovers" to round, the straighter (and further) it will go.

Barrel Length is a heated topic. Tom K (Airgun Designs) had NASA prove his distance theory back in the early 90's with a Crown Point Barrel.(see old school thread!) In summary...A 10" barrel will shoot just as far as a 18" barrel (as long as the viscous properties are equal) however the 18 inch barrel, (all viscous properties being equal) showed a moderate increase in accuracy.

Or..you can buy a good, 2 stage barrel and a quality (matched) ball that you can afford and just have fun!! PM me and I'll give you some suggestions.

1. Paintball guns are not accurate, they are consistant.
2. See number 1

Thanks for the input NPSG. I think that helped all of us some. I learned some things I didn't know about.

What about Apex barrels and the like? Since these put a backspin on the ball, causing it to almost float, could this add to the accuracy of an already accurate gun?

It doesn't really add accuracy just distance. By the time you get that extra distance there really isn't much accuracy, and if there is the balls are just floating and you can catch em with you hand.

I like doing that when flatlines are shooting me from a distance, it pisses them off more when they see me catching them and trying to throw em back. heh

I feel like the accuracy of a paintball gun is really kind of a mute topic. As Rembrandt said earlier (kinda), accuracy doesn't matter when you get up close and personal and shoot'em in the a@#, lol.
