Development of project
Microsoft developed the picture outside the studio system paying Garland $1 million to develop the script and hiring Peter Schlessel, a former executive at Columbia Pictures to develop the project which is Microsoft's first entry into the movie business(2). Microsoft delivered the script to the major film studios on June 6, 2005 with employees at Creative Artists Agency delivering the script dressed as Master Chief. E! Online reported that Microsoft set conditions such as Microsoft retaining merchandising rights, a $75 million budget and Microsoft having the rights to examine rough cuts of the movie. These conditions meant that many of the major film studios weren't interested in the project despite the success of the video game. In late August 2005, an agreement was reached with Fox and Universal Studios. Under this agreement, Fox and Universal will pay Microsoft $5 million against 10% of the movie's gross(3). In regard to marketing, Universal owns all US rights and 20th Century Fox has marketing rights in other territories. On September 17, 2005, IMDB posted that Uwe Boll had been chosen as the director of this project. Bungie Software later proved this to be false. On September 21, 2005, IMDB removed the statement after creating controversy with die hard fans of the game series. Another rumor then began to circulate that Peter Jackson, who directed the blockbuster The Lord of the Rings trilogies, would direct. However, on October 4, 2005, announcements from Universal Studios named Jackson will be the executive producer for the film, along with partner Fran Walsh, with Weta Digital providing the special effects, all information -- which Bungie.net(4)later confirmed. In early November, 2005, Latino Review, a generally respected source for movie script previews, claimed to have obtained a copy of the Halo movie screenplay. Subsequently, a detailed synopses of the alleged script was published on their web site, focusing in detail on the plot and action at the beginning of the movie(5). Some have noted that the script review merely follows the original story set out in the Halo video game and Halo novel The Flood, possibly with some added fan fiction. In early December, 2005, Peter Jackson (executive producer) sparked a rumor suggesting that Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro may be in line to direct Halo. However in subsequent interviews Jackson dismissed the rumors as false and stated that no director had yet been selected. This movie will be released sometime in 2007. GUITARIST!! yes i knew it!!!!!!
samuel L. jackson IS going to play Srgnt Johnson in halo the movie and Ed Harris is going to play Captain Keyes, Ridley Scott is sopposly going to direct HALO the movie, not Peter Jackson, here's the info.....
Description It is official, there is a story doing the rounds that Hollywood is preparing a movie about the world of Halo. If a rumor hierarchy did exist, this particular one would be on its way to college to start a 3-year course to become a rumor but considering the current buzz around anything Halo, we just had to report on it. The story does go into some detail however and if any of the names associated with the movie are correct then the chemistry sounds perfect for the job. Which Halo fan would say no to having Ridley Scott, (Blade Runner, Alien), direct, Ed Harris appear as Captain Keyes and Samuel L. Jackson as Captain Johnson. It appears that Bungie has been in talks with Warner Brothers regarding a movie but has insisted that it will only consider handing over the movie rights if the original Alien director and writer are involved, something which may throttle the project since Ridley Scott is not very easy to get. According to insider information, appearing on ain't-it-cool-news, Scott has, apparently, been offered the script, storyboards etc. before and passed on doing a Halo movie but that was all before Halo 2 started breaking all sorts of sales records. The idea of Ridley Scott directing a Halo movie seems the perfect match of high-tech effects with a traditional tense directing style and the thought of large epic-scale battles from the game appearing on the big screen under Scott's direction is definitely pleasing. It will be however, extremely disappointing if the entire project fails to take off due to one person's refusal. There is no doubt that Ridley Scott is the perfect man for the job but there has to be some other director who can handle the project; possibly a European movie directed by Mike Leigh so that we can discover the social aspects of Master Chief's career and the personal journey he has to take in order to reconcile his differences with his ageing and sick father. Since everything is at the speculation stage for the time being, we will leave you with one thought of a Halo movie directed by Ridley Scott in which tense Black Hawk Down battles are followed by claustrophobic psychological tension in the style of Alien and where breathtaking photography is accompanied by epic orchestrated vibrant music as Hans Zimmer usually creates. Not bad is it? Who would you like to see directing and starring in a Halo movie, which game do you believe is better suited to provide the story for the first movie, please share your thoughts and ideas in the user comments section.
