Ahhh! Hijack time! Connery was the best, hands down. 2nd place goes to George Lazenby. Almost all of the ideas for Austin Powers come from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", arguably the most incredible Bond flick ever made. Telly Savalas as Blofeld was a Razzie winning uber-performance. Brosnan goes third, as he was too close to Connery for comfort. Even the way he cocked his eye and squinted the other like Sean. While the lagoon scene shot at City Park in New Orleans was great and held a record for the longest boat jump, Moore was unmistakably a buffoon. With fantasmical gadgets and cars/planes and goofy characters like the Louisiana Sheriff, the movies were made to shock and amuse rather than accurately transfer the Fleming character to the big screen. Had Moore only brought his persona a la Saint to the part, he would have been a much more endearing figure. Connery had the amazing ability to portray the sly and cunning creature that was Ian Fleming's 007 invention. Could anyone else EVER said, "Poosee" like him? I rest my case... No? Read the books...

And this subject is worthy of it's own thread!

Bond watched the curious, impressive profile for a time, and then he shrugged his shoulders to lighten his thoughts and moved away.

Your knowledge of Fleming is astounding, Mrs. Le Chiffre! Now I KNOW that your admiration for Connery is genuine and you are more than a Bond movie afficionado. Bravo!

Mr. Gfgjester, *in my best bond-girl tone of font* You never should have doubted my admiration. I've never given you reason to doubt my word. And I am so much more than a Bond aficionado. Dare I hope that Dirk Pitt might be bandied about, as well?

I'm off on another recruiting campaign. One must travel far and wide for these efforts. And remember - I play for the team I recruit for. Not hired, bought or borrowed, a fake person that returns to another life. I care for the game. The genuine article is what you get with me and mine.

Miss me while I'm gone?

I go to movies to be entertained, not to see how close the movie stays to the book--the very idea of I've always found rather--well stupid--because books and movies are different media requiring different things.

Liking Connery is fine, but blaming Moore for not styaing true to the book is a improper critique because that was completely out of Moore's hands. Dislike it all you want--but don't blame the innocent. I will state that IMO, no one else could have done any better with the role in the movies Moore starred in.

A Burt R. interview comes to mine. In an interview w/ Bob Costas (I think) he replied to a question about his being critized for the movies he made & the roles he played. He replied that he played the roles that came his way & that he'd like to see what Lawrence O. & other "respectable" actors could do with the roles. And he made a good point.

Moore, along with connery & brosman has (or had in his day) a screen presence few could match. The current Bond is nothing but a Pwssy, & I predict his stay will be short & he will hurt the publics love of the Bond films.

And last, I don't give a crap about Fleming, although I'm grateful he gave us the character. I do like Bond films however and some of Connery's had some of the lamest scenes of all. I think it was goldfinger where, on the verge of death, the villian saves Bond from death by being lasered in to because of the lamest mind game ever. Was that in the book? However, the silly scene was not Connery's fault.

And a Third Hijacker has appeared...

I agree some what with you SgFN the actor is only as good as the script the writers provided.

But I too Read the Books which provide more insight into the character and there motivation...For me the closer the Movie is to the book the better the movie is...Im more entertained by the movie for that reason.

I have a stock answer for anyone who asked me during a movie why that happened? "Because the Writers wrote it that way"

All hijackers welcome!

There are some things that just shouldn't be tampered with. For me, it would be the characters in a book that make it on the big screen. Leave them alone. Change the plot, change the location, just don't touch the reason why the book was written to begin with.

Two things I've always enjoyed about Bond movies: Waiting to see what the female name would be and the musical score. Goldfinger and Live and Let Die are prime examples.

And then Ace, it wouldn't be Ian Fleming's James Bond; It would be the screen writer's and Cubby Broccoli's and Roger Moore's James Bond. If you did read the books, then you'd see what we mean. Bond had black hair, and was extremely dry. He wasn't a comedian, no matter how they wrote Moore's character. And I do apologize. I do understand that Moore was playing the character as written, and he did that well. I should have said that Moore's Bond was a buffoon compared to the Bond that was written for Connery/Brosnan.

Daniel Craig, the last Bond, was actually quite true to the books. His fall from grace was blonde hair. That immediately nixed him with viewers. His Bond portrayal was eerily close to the Fleming model of Bond as a cold-blooded assassin.

And BC, I agree wholeheartedly. Never doubted you. You took me off guard with your accuracy.

Rod, you KNOW it! But remember, not only was Niven Bond, but Woody Allen and a host of others. I'll never forget the Indians parachuting into the casino! That was afine example of changing everything as much as possible EXCEPT the plot.

And don't forget the 19 fifty-something Made-4-CBS-TV Casino Royale movie... Peter Lorre was in that one!

And lastly, the best thing about PBJ... We can debate the ins and outs of James Bond in an intelligent debate! Yeah, Baby. Give me Austin Power FOUR!
