For centuries, Hindu women have worn a dot on their foreheads. Most of us

have naively thought this was connected with tradition or religion, but the

Indian Embassy in Washington , D.C. has recently revealed the true story.

When a Hindu woman gets married, she brings a dowry into the union. On her

wedding night, the husband scratches off the dot to see whether he has won a

convenience store, a gas station, a donut shop or a motel in the United

States . If nothing is there, he must return to India and take a job answering

telephones giving us technical advice.

Silly me, I always thought it meant ....shoot...I'd better not post that. Well anyway, do ONLY the married ones wear the dot? How about widowed ones?

The red dot is worn by Indian women, and it is usually made from kum-kum, a red powder.

It is not a sign of caste, so far as I know, but spiritual.

Married women also wear a red dot closer to the top of the forehead to indicate their married status.

A lot of Pakistanis own hotels/motels here in the USA.Many of them change their real last name to "Patel",which means "Innkeeper" in their native language.
