Employees Put Good Thoughts into Motion with Frequent Packages to Soldier

When an employee in Maintenance Planning in San Bernardino, Calif., was deployed to Iraq, his co-workers decided they wanted to do something more than just wish him well.

Since he left in June 2007, his workers have put together “care” packages every few months to send to the soldier.

Steve Fasick, Adam Richardson, Gene Shymanski, Steve Dunlap, Ed White and Jeff Owen have put together magazines and snacks for their friend and co-worker.

“We also pick up stuffed animals for him to give to the children in Iraq,” Dunlap said. “We wanted to let him know that we support him.”

When Brian Coburn of Mechanical Field Operations found out what the team was doing, he took the opportunity to provide even more for the soldiers in Iraq.

While attending a paint ball tournament at Huntington Beach, Coburn talked with Naomi Tirado, a sales and marketing director for SITE Inc., to see if her company could commit to help. Tirado’s company manufactures after-market barrels for paintball markers with the STIFFI brand.

“Naomi came through for us and sent three boxes with more than 125 magazines covering 2007 through May 2008 for our troops to read and catch up on what’s what in the paint ball world,” Coburn said.

The donations from SITE Inc. will be sent to the deployed BNSF employee to share with his fellow soldiers along with the regular “care package” from his co-workers.

“We hope other companies will donate items like this,” Coburn said. “We are glad to gather it up and send it overseas to help our soldiers feel our support.”
