The end of paint woes?

One of the most common complaints about paintball is that it costs too much. And one of the most complained about culprits is paint. The bad news is that, because they are oil based (not to mention the bread and butter of commercial paintball fields), paint prices are unlikely to go down. The good news is that is that paintball innovators have heard your woes and come up with solutions… that also cost you money.

There are now several reusable brands of paintball on the market. While they are considerably more expensive than regular paintballs, the idea is that they will more than pay for themselves after repeated use. There are even paintball fields that only use reusable paint, like Reball. Reusable paint might not be great for real games (no telltale splatter) but it could save you lots of money during practice. But soon, things are going to get weirder…

On November 1, Predator Paintball will be releasing a laser paintball barrel which “uses the sound of your gun to fire an infrared laser beam at your target”. This ouch-less system sounds suspiciously like laser tag (except you need the sound of your gun to activate the laser). Reusable paintball is one thing, but can you have paintball without the paint? We´ll find out in a few months…

Could be fun for messing around in the back yard with my brother or roommate or whatever. Hehe, my brother and I used to stalk each other around the house with blunt plastic blowgun darts and sunglasses. It was a very tactical game b/c if you got anywhere near close and shot first only to miss you would likely get 'bunkered'.
