3 sentenced in paintball firings

Three men from Waterford were sentenced Friday to four years in state prison for firing a paintball gun at pedestrians as they drove through the township's Atco community in August.

Under plea agreements negotiated with Assistant Camden County Prosecutor Angela Pallo, the three, 18, 19 and 20 years old, may seek early release from prison under a program that requires tight compliance with probation regulations.

Initially charged with aggravated assault, the three pleaded to the lesser charge of unlawful possession of a weapon. Firearms convictions in New Jersey require state prison terms and usually mean a period of parole ineligibility.

Superior Court Presiding Criminal Judge Linda G. Baxter sentenced Rodney Roberts, 18, of Sapling Way; Harry Windish, 20, of Merion Avenue and George Ankenbauer III, 19, of Jackson Road.

A fourth man, James Ward, 18, of Bellevue Court, will be sentenced in mid-March.

The men had purchased the paintball gun from e-Bay, said Thomas J. Shusted, defense attorney for Windish. A police report of the incident said they drove on Jackson Road, firing at a 62-year-old man, who was hit in the shoulder, and several 11-year-olds who were skateboarding. One of the boys was hit in the neck, according to the police report.

No one was injured in the shootings, Shusted said.

"This was a horrific mistake by some young men," said Shusted.

All four had agreed to make restitution to the victims, Pallo said, but no claims were filed asking for any compensation

I agree with you about the whole brother thing. If my brother was dumb enough to do something like that, I would make a tape recording of me saying how stupid he was in many different ways and then I would request the cops play it for him the whole 4 years he is in prison.

number one, youre on pbjunkie. that must mean you play paintball more so than the average individual. this excuses you from any ignorance regarding paintballers and our ethics.

number 2, you should have taught your brother to respect the sport and not to defame its character or its players and supporters.

number 3, these guys were not kids. they were young adults. the difference being, kids make mistakes and grown ups knowingly eff up. they knew what they were doing and chose to disregard any repercussions of their actions. they deserve what they get.

Have you ever seen what a paintball traveling at 280+ fps, does to an unprotected eye? I have.. it ain't pretty. Three operations (Cornea transplants) and last I knew, the guy still could not see out his right eye.

How would your brother make restitution for that. He and his "Friends, aquaintences, what ever" could have seriously hurt someone, the old guy could have had a Heart Attack from the shock of being shot.

Again, I'm sorry your brother is the newest Prom Queen in a NJ Jail, but when you do stupid crap like this, you pay the piper.
