Thumbs up Mayor to sign paintball gun restrictions

Mayor to sign paintball gun restrictions

Wilmington City Council passed an ordinance Thursday that would make it illegal for anyone under 18 to possess a paintball gun in the city. The law would also make it illegal for anyone to fire the guns or carry them in a concealed manner.

Violators would be fined $500.

Mayor James M. Baker will sign the bill into law, city Communications Director John Rago said.

Adults would be allowed to have the guns because they could be paintball enthusiasts who go to ranges and participate in the sport, Baker aide Rhett D. Ruggerio said.

The law was created after a 4-year-old city boy was shot in the eye with a paintball gun in November 2003. Ny'mere Johnson had cataract surgery after he was shot with a paintball near 23rd and Carter streets. The shot came from a car full of several teenagers driving through the intersection.

There are no paintball shooting facilities in Wilmington.

It makes sense. There are no facilities there, so anyone serious can just say it's their parents. This is what happens when stupid kids screw around, they crack down.

Tough law, but after what happened, can you really blame them? That's probably the only thing he knows about paintball, that kids drive around and shoot other people for a laugh. As always, educating the public is a big part of growing the sport.
The law makes sense, but there should be a clause for use of markers under supervision of older people, that would allow kids under 18 to still play.

If anyone runs across legal issues such as this relating to paintball you should send any information you have to Bambi Bullard at action pursuit games. She has always been active in these issues and educating the government to help reduce unnecessary restrictions.
