[Here are my ans. to the questions I posed]
What is a referee or judge?
What types of referees are there in a scenario?
What are the specific responsibilities of these types?

A little birdy whispered in my ear [PM] that I might need to expand my ans. for the types of Referees: This little birdy would like to see:
Base Referee might need to be added since they do have a little more they are responsible for. They would be most like my description of a mission referee with the added responsibility to coordinate with the "Games Master"/Producer and each teams general to ensure the game is running smoothly and on time. The Producer runs the game let the referees referee the game. If there is a need to interpret the rules let the Head Judge interface with the Producer to ensure the spirit of the game is being followed. Zone Referee to me is how you utilize a Roving Referee by assigning a set position to a Roving Referee as his primary area of responsibility not as a type of Referee. |

hey all - sorry Ive been a bit busy lately - but I see a window in the near future to start this manual back up and maybe shoot for a rough draft soon.
*** CONTRIBUTIONS WANTED *** If you are an experienced ref, and see a topic you would like to comment on - (especially one we havent hit) just start a new thread on that topic in the paintball safety section on pbjunkie. Please prefix the title of the thread: SCENARIO REFFING : your topic ...and we will work to include your work into the manual and give credit where credit is due. I hear quite a few gripes on scenario reffing in general. I would suggest that we, the players and refs, can work to raise the bar by sharing our collective experience and knowledge, organizing it, and then linking to it from everywhere in the known universe.

how bout a "what to do if...."
an example would be my not so detailed post on what i dealt with at a game and how i handled it. off the mcb forum: tourney refs at a scenario game: theres gonna be problems. its two different worlds. even though the producer briefed them, they were still slacking and confused. my solution: dont address problems with individual refs. ask the problematic ref to radio his head ref or boss for assistance. this makes the problematic ref fear getting in trouble and do his job. explain to them that good refs do get awards for exemplary performance. bad base refs: if your ref gives you missions late or just is not on top of the game, he may just be confused. i re-briefed a ref and then he was right on top of things. just give him a break down of whats up. i also will spend my own money to stock my cp with cold gatoraide and share it with my players AND the base ref. this makes him think you care about his well being. bad calls: i see alot of refs that dont know **** about the scenario they are reffing. i.e. a satchel charge can blow a cp but a rocket cannot. i had a ref run into my cp and scream i was dead. as a general they would have got points for a cp kill and a general kill. i asked "what blew my cp?" he said a law and tried to get hard. i simply asked him to radio the producer to confirm. he was shot down on the spot and understood the rules afterwards. so again, rebriefing or going over thier head works. dont argue with them, just ask them to confirm with the producer. stunts: before i pull a stunt like planting a demo or taking a cp or dealing with a prop, i will get a ref. if a ref dont see it go down, might as well have not happened. i will make sure the ref is making eye contact with me, explain my move and make sure he is listening to me BEFORE i attempt anything. that way, if there is any question as to the legality of what i am going to do, he can ask the producer. also, if your pulling airstrikes or remote stunts, make the ref physically go and tell the right folks. i pulled an airstrike that went bogus cause the opfor was monitoring the ref channel (illegally, see previous post) and fled the area when he called it in. they are getting paid to work for you, so they shouldnt have a problem taking a brief stroll. refs working for the opfor: by giving away your position or any intel. not much you can do about a ref giving away your position when your running a mission at a certain location. they are supposed to be at the mission location when the card is handed out to observe and judge. i will ask, politely, if the ref can please back off about 100ft for us. if he does not, take the issue to the head ref. purposely giving away vital intel is a big no no. refs are not players and should keep thier mouths shut. if this occurs, get thier name and go straight to the producer. __________________
