but the eternal question is "what can be done?"
we are all at thier mercy, we are a society that drives everywhere we go. both for work and play. we could effectivly damage the economy as a whole. but wait.... with what we are expected to pay for gas there is a deminishing amount of disposable incom to start...... this my friend is called a kanundrum

well my thought on the bus is if i rearange the seating so that we can seat say 26 and a driver, i can convert the rear to storage for our gear on trips. now if we get 7-10mpg which i think is what a buddy of mine gets and divide that between a bus load the impact on these trips would be greatly reduced

kinds related but today in history i learned about in ancient greece the aristocrats in Athens owned all of the fertile farming land. people needed this land to survive so they made a deal with the aristocrats saying "ill pay the debt for the land" and the aristocrats said "ok if you can't pay for the debt for the land you are using, your family will be sold as slaves"

this, to me, is kinda an extreme example of what is happening today with gas. the gas companies know they have the world by their balls so they know they can charge outrageous amounts for gas, and no matter how much they charge people will pay it. if gas is $4.00 a gallon today and $.50 tomorrow, you will not see any more or any less people on the road because people depend on it, and the gas man knows this.

just what i was thinking as i read this..

The problem is for more then 50% of the people in the country this wont be a problem as it will be a gradual increase?

When is the last time you passed up a station that was .05 cheaper because its was inconvenient? If you have a 20 gallon tank that is only $2, how ever if you buy gas 2x a week, its only $4 how ever every year its $100+

2 years ago when katrina was in the gulf Gas shot up to $3.20 here in atlanta and people thought the world was going to end., over the course of the next year it gradually went up .03 to .06 a week/month, and nobody was shocked to learn we are now paying $3.16 a gallon and nobody is clamoring about like the world is going to end?

Its called Price Shock Adjustment. if you gradually increase prices by a small amount consumers will barely notice they are paying 50% more for an item.

How ever if there is an external catalyst that causes a MASSIVE increase in the price, Consumers realize this and adjust immediately to this.

What we need is an immediate $1.50 Tax/ Per gallon gasoline tax, with a tax adjustment given to people who drive hybrids and cars that get over 30/MPG.

This will cause an immediate 60-70% decrease in gasoline consumption across our nation. People will be come creative, with ways to avoid buying gas.

Abandon the market pricing and give it to the govenmint?

I commuted on a bike for two years during the first gas crisis and all I got was in shape and abused but the guys I was saving gas for..

Look gents. Telecommuting is the ultimate weapon against the gas boogieman whoever they are. Sure some of us can't but the number of people who could do their job from home is huge with phone forwarding and decent internet. Never hear anyone mention it. Not the Pols and not the greens. Whats with that. Before I strap a 800lb 60 mpg tin can on my arse to commute every day I'll work at home and use my ration of precious petrol for the 740 to take a sunday drive to play paintball.

Trucking companies just increased their surcharge to 25%.
It now costs me $620 to move a load from Charleston to Charlotte.
