Ghille making?
First I am going to say what I had in mind for my ghille. Well what i was going to do was use a polyester mesh like the stuff in football jerseys, so it would breath a little, to make a shirt and some pants. Then I would do some padding around the knees and elbows and such using a few layers of vinyl fabric inside the mesh. then use some more colored vinyl ((dark brown, lighter brown, green)) cut it into leaf like shapes. sew on the leafs using some brown thread.
Ohh, and I was hoping to use this by itself not over any other pant or anything ok now for the questions: 1. Do you think it would work, a.k.a would it be an effective camo to do it this way 2. How good do you think it would protect me from the deep underbrush, because it is ging to be made almost completely from football mesh besides the padding and leaves. 3. for the base material would you suggest anything besides football mesh. especially for the pant because im not sure how good that would do. 4. do you think it'll stay cool be able to breath? and if there is anything else you can think to tell me like, "Don't use vinyl for pads use such-and-such material" please do because being that i'm making my first ghille i don't wanna spend a bunch of money and find out that it won't work or that it sucks. Thank You ~Deserter |

I made one a few years back. I used a kit from this company. Custom Concealment, Inc. It uses a jute mesh and breaths very well.
Actually, after looking closer at the website it was one I thought about ordering from. Here is an other site with something like the kit I ordered and made myself. Make a Ghillie Suit - Custom Kits It turned out pretty good if I do say so myself.

Try Ghillie Suits.com Inc. We offer the Original Patented Ghillie suits and supplies. for material they are pretty cheap. I personally wouldnt go with the mesh jesery material it wont hold up very well after a few trips in heavy brush. Try to build it on a set of bdu's. old canvas works well for knee and elbow pads just attach it with some shoe goo

I used to build them out of Realtree, Trebark and Advantage burlap for the Depatrment of Corrections SERT team.
I'd use a 400-600 denier nylon mesh "turkey" top as the base and apply the burlap in 2' long sheets with an overlay of about 8-10 inches. After the top edge of the sheets were sewn to the turkey top, I'd cut them in to strips, fray them and voila'. You can mix in some hemp rope and fray it. Hot glue works well, too. Just remember that it's mesh and the hot glue will seep through the backside of the mesh. Each top would cost about 40.00-50.00 to make. Very lightweight, breatheable and fairly inexpensive. You can have the sheets as long as you want, the longer they are, the lower they hang. Just remember to place them a bit closer together so they don't spread too far apart. In Cover and Concealment, having the proper 'flage helps but it's more about picking the right spot to "deploy and execute". Not every camo pattern will blend in every environment. Stay away from ones that are too dark or too light. If you primarily play at a certain field, take a look at pictures from the spring and fall and try to match them both with a blend of patterns.
