Former Lafayette linebacker Maurice Bennett is a candidate to be selected in this weekend's NFL draft based on a monster 2005 season that saw him earn Patriot League defensive player of the year honors after registering 133 tackles, including 19 in one game against Harvard, while helping the Leopards earn a share of a second straight league championship.
The Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears have expressed the most interest and have been in contact with Bennett's agent, Ed Waslewski of ISA Sports.
A Philadelphia native, Bennett readily admits it would be a dream come true to play for an Eagles team he has rooted for ever since ''football was in my brain.''
So, will he be watching ESPN's wall-to-wall draft coverage to see where he might wind up?
''Nope,'' Bennett said. ''I'm going to be playing paintball. You won't see me crying on draft day if my name is not called. I realize my football career has to come to an end some day.''
