First you should never shoot at or be shot by a paintball gun that has not been chronoghraphed and adjusted to less then 300 fps (feet per second). The industry established this limit to ensure that paintball goggles could be designed and tested to a safe standard. I've seen paintball guns bought out of Wal-mart or K-Mart shoot over 400 fps straight out of the box

I know of no paintball field or store that will not let you chronograph your gun and show you how to correctly adjust it for a safe velocity. So go visit a store or field in your area you will find them most helpful.

If you are getting hurt pretty bad when you play, I have to awsome that you are playing "Outlaw" with friends and not at a field. You most likely are getting hit by paintguns that are shooting much higher than 300fps. Most field limit their velocity to 285 fps or less and it is similar to getting snapped with a towel. Some times it stings and leaves a welt other times you might not even feel it. I pesonnally where BDU pants and T-shirt when I play in addition to the always necessary goggles and face mask. I know guys who play in shorts and t-shirts to guys who where paintball armor.

With out more specifics on your gun and where you play this is about all the advice I can give you.

As an outlaw veteran, I've found that the $80.00 I sunk into a hand-held chronograph has been one of the best $80.00 I've spent. If you don't have enough money yourself, consider finding a few good friends and going in on it together. It could save a lot of pain and frustration.

That ^ is what I have, and it hasn't failed me over the course of the last three years.
