A tennis ball coming down from a 45* ballistic trajectory would be of limited risk of knocking off a set of goggles. The risk would be no greater and most likely less then having your goggles shot off by a paintball "rope" hitting you. Hell if someone makes it you can shoot at me until you get a good hit to see if it would. Nothing like emperical testing.

Come on Skeeter break out the physics formulas and calculator and give us a true max velocity and impact force for a tennis ball that was launched at lets say 200fps leaving the barrel at a 45* angle on it's way back down. I know you are itching to figure this out. [hypnotic voice]You can not resist[/hypnotic voice] Anyone got a scale what is the weight of a tennis ball?

I think it would be interesting, Hell you can shoot it at me as well I don't care...I've been hit with worse...Do you have any idea how bad a VHS tape slung at high velocity by a mad woman hurts? lol and I am not kidding...

What sort of area coverage would you count as destroyed when the balls hit? Does it only take out an object it hits? Or everything close? What if you could merge a grenade with something like a tennis ball only softer and it would burst off the ground and send a paint coverage of maybe 50 feet? Is this doable? I played at Badlands in Greenville Sc and the owner would shoot over an area when it got congested, he used something like what they shoot teeshirts out of at football games. I do not know if the balls broke but he said it was about a 50 ball shot. Are we talking here about a long range weapon to clear tanks, bunkers, etc? Have to have refs with radios and hope the wind is not high. I still think it needs to be something that will mark the area somehow. Kites with buckets like in Carrie? ooooohhhh when pigs fly, right?

pfft me and wizard and you ask skeeter?

The 45 degree angle is immaterial. Basically your shooting a ball as high in the air as possible to determine the max velocity on the way down. Lets assume you could hit 500 yards up. You would have to determine the terminal velocity for the Tennis ball. Once the ball reaches its maximum height it will start to free Fall with an acceleration of 9.8 m/s^2.

*does a bunch of math* Maximum potential speed is 171 MPH, I cant accuratly account for Drag, but we could do some testing, I think it would come out to aboutabout 80-90 Mph would be its impact velocity on the way down. It would have about double the force of a paintball impact but its spread over a much larger area, and the Tennis ball is much more foregiving..

I here by volunteer to fire them at grendel until the cows come home. You going to be at PB Charleston in Feb?

As for the Rules... If a player is hit with Marking dust they are OUT. If they are in a bunker that is hit, They are out. Any Vehicles hit Are out.

Man i can make a tenis ball launcher shoot like 15-20 balls a second!

Artillary has been around For years but has not be active recently due to the availibility of portable law rockets and tanks. but now that the tank rules are going to make most tanks obsolete artilary will be the way to go. Now (search google for BLANDING and some Doom Trooper pics will come up of our howitzer.) now how much does a tennis ball weigh.. How fast will it exit barrel of said artilary piece. If you can figure falling speed after the arc and decelartion .. Mass X Velocity = Force. with that you can figure out if it would be dangerous. now If we can do what you said and say NO shooting at players closer then 100 feet and say cap the velocity at 150fps you could easily get 250 feet out of a nerf round (standerd projectile for scenario safe and squishy) which in a open field around a base would make it quite useful with a team that is trained.. Just an idea. I will look farther into what was acceptable back in the day for artilarry and get back to you..

also just as a side note that i am a big believer in.. I also do reiactment sword fighting in the sca. It is custamery that if you think of a new weapon ..you must be willing to have it tested on you first.. (this kinda makes you think of saftey along the way) but just a idea.. Or by the sound of it a voulenteer of Grendal has already been sent out ..and i qoute.."OOOO that looked like it hurt" dude good luck.. i would do it .. but oo look i am in florida too far away... let me know how it turns out... ^and thanks above for doing the math... 80 mph sounds a bit fast to be hit with ..

A paintball travels around 175-200MPH. Since a tennis ball is roughly 10 times the surface area, it wouldnt be as painful as sounds.

When the tennis balls were used in "American Gladiators", I'm sure the lawyers were all over it. I remember contestants being hit in the head point blank, and they weren't wearing any helmets, they were wearing raquetball style safety glasses, and they weren't knocked off.

Not trying to discount this fact at all.. but American Gladiators also had a lot of money behind them (insurance, and whatnot), and it hasnt aired since the the mid 90's.. Things are a lot more strict these days.

Also not exactly sure how fast those tennis balls came out of their setup. granted they were directed straight at the players.
