I've noticed alot of people that send non-business SMS, IM, Posts, or Emails, tend to butcher English and/or take many shortcuts with words. Not that I'm perfect either, but I try to my best to type in complete sentences and catch spelling. Maybe it's the new generation......

thats funny.... yet as a college grad I have yet to run into the situation of " If you can tell me who the most prolific composer of the Baroque musical period was you can have the job?" I cant wait for that.

Well generally there is an expectation to sound a little educated when applying for a job, or to use proper grammer in your resume.
The grammer shortcuts are of course seen in communications across the Internet, but even more so in the business work force during e-mail communications and IM's. We use communicator quite a bit here on the job, and if I'm preocuppied with a server outage and coworkers are sending me messages via communicator asking general questions. ... it's just easier/quicker throwing in a thx over a thank you or np no problem. However, it is funny seeing the managers with the Masters and PHD's using LOL in their communications. I would agree, its a generation thing... considering we're so embedded in the electronic age... we're bound to get caught up in trends as such. Then again, is it any different from the day-to-day slang most of us apply just speaking? I'm originally from NJ, and my wife picks on me because I say "you guys", ya's, and you's. (eg. What are ya's doin?). She's from the South and says y'all, fixins, etc..etc.. |

I understand the effective use of time...my god I need all that I can get but do you feel that this type of " time management " is now pervasive in society as well. I feel sometimes that we are getting away from respect, manners, and general civility. Is life going so fast that we feel that we dont need those things? Just a question... Im feeling a little philisophical today...

I see where you're going with this, and I guess I have mixed feelings. From the business side, I don't really see a disrespect or a question of one's manners, or even intelect. Now if I was sending a letter to Grandma and Grandpa...ummm... I probably wouldn't follow up a sentence with a ROTFLMFAO.
Now if I walk into a super market and the cashier says to me "NP" rather than a thank you... yeah, that would be out of line. I guess I believe there are times when it's acceptable and not. |
