This is both the best and the worst moment for me.
While playing a five man woods tournment, on our second game I shattered my right ankle while making the flag pull. What happened was my team mates and I decided that we could rush the flag due to the lay of the land and since I was the frontman I'd grab the flag then retreat behind my teammates for the push. Then we would try to eliminate our opponents and then go for the hang and a max. Remember this is a woods tourney and it was thick on this field, but I did have a clear shot at charging the flag. Well the whistle blew and we took off, so far so good. I out distanced my teammates made it to the flag just as our opponents were coming in sight. I made a quick turn, making a grab for the flag and immediately step into a stump hole at a full run. Needless to say my body, while still holding the flag, keeps moving but my right foot decides that it wants to stay in the hole. Well I twisted, as I thought at the time, my ankle and fall to the ground breaking the hopper off my gun, just as our opponents open fire. I was able to crawl up into a bunker (deadfall tree stump), catch my breath and assess my situation. Well the first fury of fire subsides and moves a little off to my blind side of the bunker. I decided that I could still use my foot and my gun was okay minus the hopper, it was in plain veiw of our opponents so no chance of recovering it. At this point I hobbled back and to my right as quickly as I could through some brush and immediately started recieving fire from my team mates. Thankfully I was not hit and they held up on their triggers long enough for me to make it to cover behind two of them. They shot at me because they had seen me go down when the other team opened fire and assumed I'd been taken out and thought the flag was sitting on the ground below the flag station. Now our opponents also, as we found out later, thought I'd dropped the flag and was eliminated and they had already lost 2 players during the initial fire fight. We quickly decided to give the flag to a teammate that was not injured and that it was time to go hunting for our remaining opponents. After a few more seconds it appeared that our enemy had decided to go mushroom and protect their flag, not a really good tactic in a tourney but some teams try it. Since I could barely walk let alone run and did not have a hopper for my gun and could only hand feed 2-3 balls at a time we decided I'd lead, as a "bird-dog" into the brush with two flankers covering me leaving our flag carrier and a cover player behind us to act as a reserve and protect the flag carrier. We eventually pushed through the brush when our opponents opened fire too soon on me giving away their positions. I was able to dive (well really fall) into some cover and I kept up as much fire as I could, given no hopper, to mark our opponents' hiding spots and allow my flankers to move into position for the "kill". My flankers were able to eliminate the remaining players and our flag carrier sucessfully made the hang. After the judges checked us out it was determined we had Maxed the game.
We were pretty jubilant over the win and getting a good spot in the finals and started heading back to our staging area. At this point the adrenaline is waring off and my right foot is both starting to kill me and be numb at the same time. I hobble for awhile but eventually had to ask for some help to get back to our staging area. When I got sat down and look at my foot you can see my ankle ballooning through my boot some of the guys tell me to take my boot off but luckly our "coach" and sponsor Dennis Day is a retired Fireman and EMT and we decide the best thing is to leave the boot on. Dennis wants me to go to the emergancy room to get it checked out but I overrule him and decide to stay with my foot, in it's boot, packed in ice while our team goes on with the tourney. Well we do not win the tourney, but did place 3rd.
Now this took place near Charlotte, NC and at this time I live in Charleston, SC about 3hrs away and one of our teammates riding with me in my truck. When we get done I decide that I'll get my ankle looked at at home at the Navy clinic instead of going to a local emergancy room. To make matters even worse my truck was a 5 speed and the guy riding with me could not drive it and was unwilling to learn. So I had to drive 3+hrs with my foot killing me. Well I made it home and had a night of no sleep then finally decide the next morning I needed to get it checked out. Well when the doctor looked at my foot before xrays he did the little pull and twist thing they love to due and immediately told me I had a broken ankle. He said later that he could actully feel the broken pieces of my ankle grind togather. Well after five surguries and 3 screws inserted and then removed I can actually walk without a limp and run though not as fast as I once did. It is very weak and requires a brace most of the time but it does not stop me from playing paintball. I just can not get my mind around playing tourney ball anymore because I know I can not push myself as hard as I used to.
