World Travel
Seems there is not a thread for Travel/Vacation, so, I guess I could start one here by asking: Has anyone been to Athens Greece? I am heading there tomorrow spending the night. What to do???

Ok, you pretty much lose a day flying over, unless you take a night flight. Read about it on the way there. Get your hands on a Greece travel book written by Rick Steves. He is absolutely the best on travel. He will tell you everything you need to know & stuff even locals won't tell you. I promise you his info is the stuff to go with. Anyway, there will be more to do than you'll have time for. Personally, I'd fight, argue, take more vacation time, whatever for more days there. It's a long way to go for 1 night. If you're single, I hear Greek woman in-country are on the naughty side-- & that was told to me by a Greek lady. And yes, Junkie, we need a travel section with U.S. and Europe sections, maybe S.A., Mexico, etc.

I was in Europe (Germany) already so flying time wasn't an issue. When I got there it was cold and raining so I didn't get out to do any "sight seeing". It did look like they had 2 adult orientated clubs a block away from each other, however, I am not a real fan of those places so I didn't go to any of them.

That's too bad. Germany is a beautiful country--I hope you had a good time there. Hopefully you'll get to go back to Greece soon. I'm planning on going back to Europe next year. I'm a big fan of Italy, so I think we're defintely hitting it again. After that, it's kinda up in the air. I'd like to hear ideas from people who know of interesting places to visit & things to do.

Actually, I am in Germany right now, my work keeps me in mainly in Euro/Middle East. Biggest problem with being over here is the exchange rate, it is not favorable for the USD at this time so everything is "more" than it is usually.

Well the exchange rate is rather bad right now, but I still envy you.
Well I hope you're taking advantage of your situation. Personnally, I love to travel, yet I do very little real travel. I tend to think every country has something to offer, but the travel gurus tend to point to Paris & Rome as the main attractions in Europe. Then you have England and with Greece you have perhaps the 4 biggest destinations for tourists. I haven't been to all the major countrys yet, but here's a few I can vouch for. Italy: Rome--Man you can spend weeks in Rome & not see everything, yet you can hit the major stuff in a couple of days. Everything depends on what you like. If I could only visit 1 place in Europe, I'd chose Rome. I stayed inside "old Rome", which is simply inside the old city wall. Doing so allows you to walk to most of the old attractions. But Italy has so much to offer--Pompie & nearby Naples are a must. Pompie is simply alsome & Naples is breathtaking. Those two are a solid day for most people at least. Sorento is great too. Lots of musems. Florence, which they spell very differntly, is a really nice city. It's worth a least 2 days & you can easily spend more there--the statue of David is there & worth seeing. Lots of musems. Food--oh my goodness-- There's a castle in Germany that Disney used as a model for Cinderella's castle. It called something like Neuswastien (mispelled for sure). Actually, there's 2 castles there. The less famous one is more interesting--it dates to the 1200's & real knights hung out there. The area called Germany was once ruled from there. BTW--30 minutes away in Reuter there are at least 2 more castles. If I remember correctly, one of those belonged to Maximillian. Go there & you get to go over the Fern Pass (Google that-great view). Great place to ski too. If you decide to go, let me know. I can give you the name of a good, friendly hotel, who happens to have a great english speaking lady working there. Good place to eat even if you don't spend the night. I really like Switzerland, but even 3-4 years ago, before the dollar fell, it was kinda high. There are some really cool places to go there. Lucern has 2 long wooden bridges built before C. Columbus was even born. Very, Very beutiful city. Be sure to sample the roasted chestnuts the street vendors sell--then you'll truly understand that line from the Christmas classic "..chestnuts roasting on the open fire..". The people are very nice too. Lucern is kinda like Greenwood--it's an area, it's a city, & it's a lake too. I gotta stop now, but these are a few of my favorites over there so far. Anyway, I'd love to here your comments on some of the places you've been.

Ah yes, Neuschwanstein Castle, biggest thing I remember about that one is the walk you have to take up to it. The other castle you mentioned is Hohenschwangau Castle. It was built before Neuschwanstein and Mad Ludwig stayed there when he was a kid.
Sitting in Dubai, UAE, home to the man-made islands and the Burj Al Arab Hotel (rooms start at $1,800.00 a night, don't think Capt Kirk could be a deal on this place)! They are also building the worlds largest airport complex and spending $5Billion (USD) on a new rail transit system. This goes to the old addage: POVERTY SUCKS!
