so i want to get into stock/pump play to conserve paint balls and make the sport cheaper for me to play. College is a little more important.
but that dosnt mean i cant have fun... so my two choics for pump are..... an ACI maverck, equipped is a 14inch j and j ceramic barrel, stock, a 50 round hopper and a quick 12 gram apparatus. and a Phantom, with detentes, m16 grip. the ACI maverick is much cheaper, but is the phantom worth the extra cash? any help would be very benefical, i play with a upped 98c as of now if that matters to anyone.... thanks...... |

not gonna lie. i know NOTHING about the ACI maverick... but my phantom is ball on ball, and shoots darts. every phantom owner i have known, LOVES their phantom as much as i do mine... i'd drop the extra cash on a phantom.

Definately go with the Phantom, it is by far the better of the two. Everyone does love their phantom, I have an OLD unibody 8" from 1990, and it's great... Of course, it can't hold a candle to my pride and joy, Line SI Bushmaster. BUT... If you want one of those, you'd have to by one used on some place like, mcarterbrown.com.

I had a phantom once, and a maveric -- both fun - both high pressure, both pretty noisy. Bushmasters are in the same class - but a bit more durable (built like tanks) - never had one, but in-general they rock. If you havent tried a decent sniper II you should at least try one. the big advantage in my book is the ability to drop the pressure down to 350psi and be a bit more quiet when plinking away -- try not holding the pump handle when you shoot. (grab the reg instead) and you will see what I mean. add a decent barrel kit, and you have a nice gun. the downside to a sniper is they can be pretty pricey to add AutoTrigger capability. But if done right, an AT'ed sniper can rock the house -- easily keeping pace with a stock 98. Phantoms, Maverics and Bushy's all come factory AT'ed. If you dont mind vert feed, there are a lot of inexpensive new sniperII's out there. factory milled down to nothing. seems I saw a punch of prostocks w/ 45 sliders w/ regs for $189 - but I dont see them right now. $189 bin WORR GAMES PRODUCT WGP OUTKAST SNIPER 2 PUMP AUTOCOCKER - eBay (item 330161444436 end time Jan-28-08 17:08:16 PST) and ebay on occassion has a bargain $149 bin

If you are wanting to go the 12gram route with stock feed the way to go is with the Phantom. The Phantom has been around for a long time and any bugs were worked out long long ago. Mike Cassidy of CCI is know for his attention to detail and quality of construction. Also a Phantom is very efficient which is what you need for 12grams. There are always nice setups out there for sale especially on Ebay and mcarterbrown.com.
If you are going "Open Class" then any pump will work and the deals Thumper listed could be a good route to go. Snipers are a little harder to setup to run efficiently off 12grams but it can be done. The Maverick is a good middle road nelson based gun. A Phantom is a high end nelson based gun. You could also look into Lapco Grey Ghosts: ![]() or the new Nameless Pump [PYRE] by Palmers Pursuit: ![]() I actually have one of the Palmer's Nameless Pumps on order [ #PY008] and should recieve it before the end of the month. Expect a review soon after. This is a new gun and only a few [<10] have been recieved by customers yet. |

so although i can get a maverick, a 14inch ceramic j and j barrel, a quick change co2, and a t stock for about $200 shipped, the bone stock, stock class phantom is still a better choice?
i dont want to play 100% stock, just with a light weight pump, thats why there is even a question of the maverick, because i dont see it wise to shell out 240ish for a phantom when i can get more accessories and ect for a maverick also is the phantom's stock barrel better than a j and j ceramic barrel, that is probaly the deciding factor thanks agian you guys are very helpful and wise.... |

Phantoms are worth every penny. That being said:
ACI Mavericks are good nelson based guns just not as nice as a Phantom. A Maverick will get the job done and will give you a lot of good times. The J&J ceramic barrels are very good barrels too. You could very well be perfectly happy with the Maverick and it is a nelson based gun so it is inherantly very efficient with CO2. ACI just never payed as much attention to detail and quality as CCI so the Phantom will always feel a little smoother, a little tighter fit...etc. I know of players who still look for Mavericks and would rather play with them than Phantoms. It really doesn't matter which gun you get. My best advice is get the best quality equipment you can afford that still leaves you enough money to play paintball too. The important thing is to play. A $60 paintgun will eliminate you just as easily as a $500 paintgun. It really is the user that makes the difference. By the way $200 seems a little steep for a Maverick even with the accessories you listed. You normally can pick up a Maverick in good shape in the $60 range. Here is an example: $50 ACI Maverick Deluxe - mcarterbrown.com |
