FPO Vs. BYOP & Why The Markup Is There.

From MPP Games:

First of all, “B.Y.O.P” paint doesn’t mean “FREE” paint! You’ve got to purchase your paint somewhere. Fields that work with MPP Games charge from $50 to $65 a case; paint that normally would cost you between $35 - $45 in any store. We are not talking about cheap white box, or old discount paint that’s been sitting on a shelf, but rather high-end field paint or tournament level. (The essence of this game is still hitting what you aim at and having the ball break.) Considering there’s only a $15 or $20 difference, which paint would you rather shoot? Yeah, you want the good stuff, of course, but why is there any markup at all?

Look at the fields that require field-paint only. Bear Claw and Paintball Charleston are great examples. The profits made on paint go right back into the field and the amenities that the players enjoy. This doesn’t mean pallet bunkers (and those of you that have played these fields know exactly what I’m talking about). So, are you getting more bang for your buck? At these events the fields, in conjunction with MPP, additionally offer:

· Player accommodations such as hot food instead of just snacks, or Bear Claw’s hot showers and real bathrooms

· On-field forts and bunkers (these structures don’t just happen, but take time, effort, money and an investment in the future)

· Specialized, game-oriented props

· Exclusive, iron-on patches designed specifically for each game

· Additional, laminated “Special Role” tags, beside regular player IDs

· Added attractions like pyrotechnic shows, which create more than just a game, but rather an event. These help the players to immerse themselves into what a scenario paintball game should be.

· Quality trophies and awards specific to the event (not generic certificates)

· In most cases, a very generous prize package (and not all prizes are donated!)

· Special promotions like: register a group of 10 or more, receive a free case of paint; parents registering with a child, receive a free case of paint; active-duty military, receive a free case of paint.

Every great field in the country, Skirmish, EMR, Challenge Park, SC Village, Wayne’s World, Bear Claw PB, Paintball Charleston, and dozens more, are considered “great” because they give back to their players in many ways.

The bottom line seems to be that in life, as in scenario ball, you get what you pay for.

I agree with this. I dont mind spending a little more for the best. I hate going to a scenario & you pay $70 a case for BAD paint. Bear Claw & PBC you dont have to worry about it. Its going to be good paint, you not going to pay that much, & if there is a problem you wont get the lip service you get from some fields & promoters. " Well thats what the company sent us. You should call them & complain." I was told that at a event. That was the end of the conversation..... I dont worry about that with these guys.

It is so true, you do get what you pay for. I would rather pay extra and have a memorable experience. Some fields charge $70 - $80 a case for Saturday walk on play (and comparing a walk on game to a top notch scenario game, is like comparing High School football to the Super Bowl).

I don't mind payin a few extra bucks for paint at PBC during scenerio time. They always have kicka!ss paint. I would not want to run cheap paint through a marker that I spent hundreds of dollars on anyway. I want to make sure that what I am aiming at is what gets hit!!!

I don't know much about Bearclaw, I played there once and had nothing but good things to say, but I do know a good deal about PBC. I started playing there when they were a 15 acre field in the middle of no where. From the beginning they put everything they could into improving the field and the player experience in general. If you have a problem with anything from paint to a lack of shade you can talk to them in an adult manner and they will listen.
I have been to fields where the feeling was that the owners were there to make money. From the first time I played at PBC it never had that feel. You can tell the owners have pride in the field and want nothing more than to be known as one of the premier fields for the player in the world.

Sniff...Sniff.....I miss you guys.....lol

I am looking forward to playing PBC for the first time this fall. Everyone I've talked to has nothing but good things to say about the field. Next month will be my third trip to BC, and it is truly a great field. Bob & Suzie really have put a lot of money and time into building a great paintball field.

It really comes down to customer service, doesn't matter if it is paintball, buying a new car, airline tickets, vacation package, furniture, etc. If you provide your customers with good service and care about them, people don't mind paying a premium. Treat your customers right and they will return. If not, you'll be looking for new clients all the time or be out of business.

Deep!!! All you have to do is move back to Charleston. I'll buy you a years worth of beer in exchange for cocker tech services.

Yes, we do have an FPO policy during scenarios, but regular rec ballers with your own equipment can shoot any non-red filled paint that you wish.

Just a basic scenario can be cost prohibitive for a field. The admissions "may" pay for the ref staff and some of the props that were purchased or built before the event. Some of the other costs that most people don't consider: Extra dumpsters, extra porta-potties, replacing the boundaries after the event, extra HPA & CO2 (not just the contents, but rental of cylinders), extra payroll and probably a bunch more that I can't remember at 3 am.
