The problem with a "tennis ball launcher", even if it is chrono'd in, is that it launches a hard projectile with enough mass that could knock a mask ajar or completely off. Then you have an insurance risk. I doubt that you could get an insurance waiver for such a device.

Question is, do we have Nerf's covered at all in insurance policies? Probably not. Its like tank insurance. They havent been covered but for a very few events in the last several years. Now there is tank insurance in various forms depending on who you use and who you listen to. But does that cover Nerf cannons? Probably not and it sure wont cover tennis ball launchers. Tennis ball launchers as mortar rounds I like. If they are fired at an angle I dont see an isue with them. But to get any range and accuracy in a staight line, they are probably gonna have to be fired harder then a nerf that is aerodynamicly shaped. Is there any one that has tested that ideal out any? |

Hard to come by depending on where you live and at $2 a pop it can get a bit costy. I blew probably $30 worth in the last game I did. I had three dozen, and I figure I got maybe ten back...
We've got good supplies here in NC, but futher down south, they gotta pay more off the net to get them. That hurts. Then there are the JCS rounds. Forget them if you muzzle load. Breech loading is a pain on them. Dont get them in the barrel straight and they loose all accuracy when they come out of the barrel at wierd angles. I have tried the foam balls (stress relief ball/Relieved my stress to launch it) that are a bit softer then the foam on the Nerf's but not alot. They do good, but it is a round projectile. You dont get the level flight you do of the Nerf's. For the round projectiles (tennis ball, foam ball) a rifled barrel may help. But the only one making them is currently out of business (unless they have reset up shop). |

I think that tanks and therefore LAW's are an intergral part of scenario games. I am not sure that a tennis ball/type projectile would be any more acurate or have a longer range. And even if those other rockets flew better and farther as advertised... $6.50 a pop is a bit steep...
As for the safety of a tennis ball launcher, has anyone stood in front of tennis ball throwing machine on a tennis court? Kids learning to play tennis, how many hurt? And then a more direct example, does anyone remember the 90's TV show "American Gladiators"? One of the games they played involved contestants running from one bunker to another, using different "weapons" to hit a target to disable a air gun that shot tennis balls at a reported 200 mph (293.3333 fps) HMMM... And I like the blue chalk on the nerf rocket idea, actually the chalk comes in several different colors, so it could change field to field. |

Its not so much the balls hurting, as they just might. Its knocking the mask off and the following paintballs impacting the eye at just under 280 fps.
I think we (me) have taken a tangent off the topic. Got too involved with projectiles. I'll stop now, so every one can get back on the trail. |
