After action report.. ala Thumper

Its sunday and my head is thumping - My son and I had a baseball tournament after the scenario and Im here to tell you thats one long day..

First off: thanks to the weather for being "not too hot". It was real nice till around 2 when the cloud cover bring and old sparky came out. I would have liked to had a little drizzel to cool things off some, but it wasnt to be.

Second: Given the heat, and the nature of the game, and the volume of paint, I would have throught we would have had at least 3 times the number incidents with hot tempers and the like. But it wasnt to be. The excellent sportsmanship from the players and the excellent veteran sfaffers helped keep things cool headed - and the mid day break seemed to be a very good idea.

Third: As a producer getting decent paint is always a stressfull thing as the skids roll in. Paint varies from batch to batch - and I was tickeled to have 200+ cases of decent field paint. Draxxus Blaze delivered. The orange fill showed up very well, broke very well on target, and shot well. We did have some walkon yellow - and if anyone knows who brought this let me know (PM). Im sure the other fields and produceres will be interested in this information.

Forth: Did'nt you just hate the gunship? - I love it. This little device added a lot to the game - and we did have a few lessons learned on its usage. (Chappy - I know, I know) And lessons learned are always incorporated.

Fifth : And I know this is touchy - The numbers. We had 149 players. On the VC the veteran baller innerwolf heading up the very respectable 13 Little Girls for force including their Papa Nix who I know to be a very formidable front line commander, plus a 2X Slackers, 2XPain Cell (Spyderman, and Bunker - nuf said), and 5XBanzai for local field knowledge - plus a few Woodruff Warriors(Saluda Paintball) for more firepower. 72 VC total.

This was paired againt Ace who had a 8 members of section 8 (for local field knowledge), and 4 ODA for veteran mission running abilities and 5 more walkons. He then had to strike a deal with the Yards who had the 9xJAPS and 4xBall Busters for local field knowledge, and 18xCarolina Riot who came down to hunt innerwolf and sling some paint and a few more. Pretty balance in my book, if the alliance worked - which was the whole point of the story line.

Official Numbers by my count 149 = 72VC .vs. [ 18 USSF + 59 YARDS]

At the first mission at 10:35, 50 USSF/Montegnards showed up to Hoa Cam and maybe 5 VC came to challenge the objective. This gave the yards their "training" and their face tape and the US/YARD alliance was solid from here on out. The VC may have made a strategic boo-boo in not going after this one with full force to confuse or weaken the aliance before it became official. The two armied then met (11:05am) full force at Hue City, Kontum and Ban Me. And much paint was slung. We have a lot of folks who like to sling paint, and Hue City is a great place for battle. IONS, DM's, A5s chewed the earth. And snipers prowled around looking for white meat. Firepower seemed very well balanced. Ill have to dig up the score sheet for more detail - but this was the start.

About an hour later the USSF/YARDS were rolling the objectives. Massed forces slinging paint, followed by harrassment at the VC base. I consulted my head ref, Aerion, and the enemy generals on how things were going to help make an adjustment - the first of several made during the game to help challenge the USSF/YARD force.

Adjustment #0 : I didnt want to monkey with flopping a few locals from side to side. The numbers were 72 VC .vs. 77 USSF/YARD. This experience was also well balanced, as were the "tourney guys" packing DM's etc.

Adjustment #1 : 11:00 - I instructed Micky (running registration) to put all walkons and late comers on the Pink until they had a +10 player advantage.

Adjustment#2 : 11:05 - VC were reported to be inserting close to the compound both in the corner of antietam and the the gap in the tape. I didnt do anything other than notify Aerion. This does two things to the VC - one good one bad. The VC used the compound for rest, reinserted quickly, but by-passed checking with their command chain in person. This is a typical problem in any scenario that veteran generals should know exists.

Adjustment#3 : 11:15 - I instructed Pumba (The VC base Ref) that the VC did not need ref escort for tunnel network usage.

Adjustment #4 : 12:00 The VC were allowed to use the midfield tunnel exit at F11 as a spawn point until 1:10. Both generals were notified and all VC in the area of midfield.

Adjustment #5 : 12:10pm The VC were allowed unlimited usage of the gunship until 1:10pm (the break).

12:30 - the compound and parking lot had a lot of VC hanging out. It was hot and breaks were needed - but suprisingly the US used their base very effectively for rests and rehydrating. This also helped them stay unified when launching missions.

Adjustment#6 : 2:30 the VC were allowed to use any tunnel exit as a spawn point until game end.

Adjustment#7 : 2:30 the VC were allowed to unlimited usage of the gunship until further notice.

Adjustment#8 : 2:45 - The USSF incured some "mechanical problems" when calling for the gunship. Ace then made a few "reservations" for its usage, later to be used very effectively.

Adjustment#9 : 4:30 - After the US rolled through Antietam, I closed two of the tunnel exits on Antietam for safety.

-------------

Mike - this sound accurate? Im pulling from memory through a pounding headache.

Ill post more later.

it was a great game and i thank everybody at TT for putting it on. i would love to play with or against riot in the future. they seemed like standup guys that had their stuff in order. great job everyone.
yeah thumper your summary sounds accurate. i guess a 1000pt butt kicking all day long just landed a lot of VC in the staging area trying to rest and break. i know i personally sat over there with my wife for 30 minutes after the 4:00 objective. we both had headaches from repeatedly being drilled in the dome with paint. haha. i think you did a grat job and appreciate the effort to level the field. in the end it was still a massive overwhelming defeat for us VC. there were just so many times when i kept feeling that VC had the same group of 20 to 30 people running all the missions, and losing.

Thumper, this recap sounds pretty accurate to me. I actually went to the VC fairly early and started gunship operations to try and give the VC a leg up. The VC had a hard time capitalizing on the opportunites the gunship provided. In fairness to the VC though, I had to see the gunship in operation myself a couple of times to appreciate what it brings to the table.

There is no question that the little girls put up a valiant fight, even when they were way, way down. But what else would you expect from United States Marines! Semper Fi!

Riot will welcome any and all opportunities to play with or against the Little Girls: we will consider it a real honor in fact. Mass respect to you guys for your performance yesterday: i think you all partied until midnight then turned around the next morning geared up, locked and loaded, and ready for war; then put up one hell of a fight despite extreme temperatures. If anything, the VC should have received bonus points on that note alone!

You guys stay safe out there and return home in one piece. Look us up at www.carolinariot.com or www.pbunderworld.com when you get back!
