1993, Somilia. US Special Forces and Rangers are on a mission to secure and capture a head terrorist, Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The SF guys went in first and everything was rutine and going according to plan. In the immediate area there were 17 helicopters all with the code name Super 60-77 with 40 Delta Force (SF guys) and 70 Rangers.
Army Rangers are SF. Even plain old airborne are considered SF. Deltas are just more elite than Rangers. Delta Force is an SF branch which officially does not exist. They specialize in hostage rescue, prisoner extraction and similar entry/exit events.

The convoy did not include any tanks or armored vehicles. It was 12 hummers and 3 large trucks. Also, the Ranger Base was not at the Soccer Stadium. The soccer stadium is where UN and 10th Mtn Div armored vehicles assembled to stage the morning after rescue.

Aidid was never either captured or killed. Nor was he the mission objective. The actual targets were members of Aidid's upper management. The objectives were succesfully secured and extracted. They were extracted when the Hummer/Truck column returned the base in the late afternoon.

The birds which were shot down were Super61 and Super64. There were two survivors of the Super61 crash, both of them were extracted by little bird within approximately 10 minutes of the crash, however, one of them was fatally wounded by gunfire as they defended the 61 crash site. Rangers arrived on scene to help the Delta snipers from 61 board a little bird and evacuate. The Rangers then set a perimeter around the 61 crash so they could recover the pilot's body. Mike Durant was not involved in this crash.

Lt. Col. Danny McKnight led the 12+3 column to extract the Deltas, Rangers and prisoners (in the original extraction plan). This column succeeded in recovering the prisoners, deltas, and two chalks of rangers, and then was tasked with securing the 64 crashsite. They never reached the crashsite mostly as a result of roadblocks.

After returning to base, SSG Struecker was assigned a mission to get a hummer column (4 hummers, 3 5-ton flatbeds) to the 64 crashsite to provide backup to Shughart and Gordon and extract all living and casualties from the crashsite. This column was dispatched relatively early in the evening, but was unable to find a path the crashsite, mostly because of roadblocks which had been erected by the Mog forces.

Shughart and Gordon are NOT the two snipers who were in the crash of Super 61. They were snipers on another bird who volunteered to secure the 64 crash site in case there were any survivors (which indeed, there were as pilot Mike Durant had survived the crash, tho he had broken his back and his femur). It was for this action, in which they held the crashsite for nearly two hours against as many as 5,000 somalies, that they each recieved posthumous medals of honor. Both snipers were killed at the scene, and Durant was taken captive.

Here is a site that has the book online if you care to read it; http://inquirer.philly.com/packages/.../default16.asp
Althog the Mogs jumped out to a HUGE lead in Super 61, towards the end of the event we were heavily outnumbered by the Ranger team (about 30-20) and lost (I think) 7 of the last 8 missions. Rangers nosed it out on the VERY last mission of the event.

Sorry dont mean to get in on this so late. I know just a little about this being I was at Ft.Campbell were the chopper unit involved is HQ. The 160th S.O.A.R. "Nightstalkers" Mike Durant was a polit on one of the blackhawks. I belive it was 3 that survied the crash's. One was Durant who was held captive for I think it was 11 or 13 days. The other 2 were part of the air crew on the 1st chopper. THe 2 delta snipers were KIA. You can check out more facts on this at WWW.SPECIALOPERATIONS.COM

Also the Aida guy they were after was killed in 96 the very next day Gen. Garason retired. Go rent Blackhawk down and read everything that pops up before or after the movie and you will get the point. 19 service men lost there lives on this mission. Everyone remeber this when out ther ethis weekend.

Thumper. I think a moment of slince for the 19 lost before the game would not be too much to ask out of respect for these heros?

You know,

in the spirit of this conversation with all these great ideas, I'd like to say that I just love all of these scenarios.

I've known people all of my life who were in D-Day, Omaha Beach, France, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and soldiers today in Iraq. I also had the honor of meeting a man who was among the first to see the concentration camps were the Jews were held during world war 2 and have met and heard the testimonies of many holocaust victims.

These scenarios help me to better understand the gravity of what they went through. It's pretty easy for me to pretend that those paintballs are bullets for a second and when I do that, it blows me away at how brave our soldiers are. Scenarios give me a whole new perspective on what it might of been like for them in the past and present.

I completely agree in spending some time in recognition of the men who died and men who have served.

-Thanks Thumper, your doing a great thing!
