Here we go ; What happen to Tank Ref's. When we first started with Tank's their was a Ref. for ever tank even if the tank's had to swap out their time on fields. Yes, it is a hard job but that what the Ref. get paid to do.

Field owners and scenario promoters should always comp tank crews.

At the last Waynes World Finale, the system of suppling your own tank refs worked fine. I would suggest trying that each game until the point where a team's tank walker is calling the game how he wants to see it. Player refs are still a good idea that aren't used as much anymore. while it was my turn to do the walking for our tanks down in Ocala, i easily made 50 elimination calls on both sides (i had a ref jersey on, and they were hit) and have the welts to prove that i pulled a good number of eliminated kids and adults out of tight spots while some people were just laying down paint on em. By myself i was able to do that and make tank calls, plus have pretty clear communication with "my" tanks, and the other competent refs on the field... and i wasn't even getting paid. I'm sure between the field owners, promoters, and players, we can come up with ideas and preventative measures for tank related injuries.

I just got this email from our tank insurance company today, in regards to a request I had sent to insure our tank for the October 13-14 MXS game at Splatbrothers:
Hey David, I’m sorry but we don’t have a market for paintball tanks anymore. The last company we had pulled out in July of this year. We are busy looking for a new source but for right now we can’t insure you. I will let you know if anything changes but I don’t anticipate getting back into that market before the end of this year. Okay I found some insurance that would do well for us tankers. I am temporarily retired from tanks, but I will have another one next season. At any rate, I had to go pay my car insurance the other day and the topic of liabilty law suits came up. So my agent explained to me about their Umbrella Liability Policy. And I bought a policy on the spot.
Some of you probably have these already but if not this is a great thing to have. Cost me less then $150 a year for $1,000,000 worth of liabilty coverage. This suppliments me auto policies. It covers all kinds of claims. If I accidentally bumped into someone and the fell and broke a hip and sue me, I'm good to go. Someone hurting them selves on my property (with out home owners insurance) it covers. If I flip over my Kawasaki Mule and rip someones arm off, I'm am covered, as long as I dont get sued for more than a million dollars that is. I got this policy through State Farm. Its ideal coverage for tankers. It doesnt help for those fields and promoters that require to be listed on the policy. But if the promoters and field owners will except the liabilty waiver and require them selves to be listed on the insurance policy then we can fore go this whole deal of tank specific insurance. Luckily most on here play MPP. MXS I believe was the one requirering to be put on the policy... EDIT: I sent a email into MXS to find out exactly what they do require. I heard from a tank crew that does their events they may no longer be requirering to be put on the policy. I will post up any info I run across incase any of you guys hit thier events. We've got alot of teams here on the other side of NC that hits their event up in Virgina. Last edited by JesterTLS; 10-11-2007 at 03:19 AM. Reason: additional info |

I heartily recommend an "umbrella" policy to all my clients. The premiums usually aren't too bad for million dollar protection.

Actually, insurance companies protect from lawyers. So I blame lawyers.

I don't beleave "Tanks" will ever be absent from scenario paintball.
They add so much extra playability to scenario paintball. They will however change which is inevitable. Just as paintballs, guns/markers have changed over the 22 years I've been playing. Do you remember a time when there were no "Paint Grenades"? I do. I remember when I first heard about tanks being used in scenario's, but if asked I'd have to think and look in my magazine archive. Tanks are kinda like "microwave ovens" when we finaly got them and they became common place we think what did we do with out them. AirConditioning is another analigy to tanks I rememer when we didn't have A/C. No tanks will never be completely removed from paintball they will however change as is the way. |
