Oliver Lang quits DYNASTY!!
There's an air of excitement in the air at Dye today. After talking with the owner of Dye and the Ironmen, Dave DeHaan (Youngblood), it's pretty clear why. Dye just grabbed paintball's best and most popular player.
"Pretty much what we've done is we concluded a deal with Oliver Lang. It will be a long-term multi-year deal. He will be the face of our company (Dye). We're looking to him for individual endorsement of our brand," said DeHaan.
This deal adds tremendous value to the Dye brand, strengths the Ironmen, and weakens paintball's number 1 team in one swoop.
"We believe he is arguably the number 1 player in the world. We feel he has a lot of marketing potential. There is a value there that's not being accessed," said DeHaan.
Oliver is no stranger to the Ironmen and Dye. He's had a long term relationship with Dye and even played with the Ironmen before rejoining Dynasty just before the team's tremendous rise to popularity a few years ago.
Dave wouldn't discuss exactly how much Oliver was offered, saying, "At the minimum he will be making six figures. It's only going to grow from that point forward. This is a big thing for the industry. It adds legitimacy for paintball players as a whole."
From other sources close to the deal, we've heard Oliver was offered at least $100,000.
But what about all the hardcore Dynasty fans? According to DeHaan, signing Oliver is the largest deal of its kind in paintball, but Dye has also been in talks with all of Dynasty itself.
"We have been in negotiations with Dynasty, in terms of sponsoring the whole team. We threw a deal at them that exceeded $500,000 over three years and were rejected on the deal," said DeHaan.
So Dye got the next best thing: Oliver Lang.
Dye is certainly aware there may be some negative backlash among Dynasty fans, but sees this as a positive step forward; not for only Dye and Oliver, but for all of paintball.
"People always don't like seeing change. I'm sure there will be (backlash)," said DeHaan.
But this new Oliver Lang deal provides an unprecedented benchmark in paintball. In many ways it legitimizes the sport to have highly paid athletes.
As the deal stands now, “Oliver Lang will be paid to be Oliver Lang.” He will still travel the world, play paintball, do autograph signings, and be the poster boy for Dye. Eventually DeHaan sees the possibility for an Oliver Lang signature series of parts, although that won't happen right away.
According to Dye, they will be sending out press releases on Monday, and Oliver will probably be making a statement of his own on his website.
"for 2000 dollars that gps better know when roads are closed on thursdays, make me go faster than 0 mph, be able to tell me how much gas i have, and have a clock that isn't 3 hours ahead."
