Gettysburg:strategy & tactics talk
First I would like to bring to everyones attention a flaw in the first version (now corrected) of the game rules for Gettysburg. May want to reprint the new rules to have on hand. Thumper will announce when reissue of game rules has occurred on the website.
Main Army Flags can be used as a respawn point after the time for the assault has ended as long as it remains in it's current flag stand (all other flag stand will have been pulled after the assault has ended). If it is removed respawn is over and the flag stand is pulled up. The next opportunity to use the flag as a respawn point will occur at the next assault.

Assault on the Union Left!
total time alloted 45 minutes Battle Area A1 has to be held by confederate forces for 5 continuous minutes to be awarded victory points. The area is held by placing a battle flag into a flag stand located at the Battle area. The completion of this mission triggers- Battle Area A2 which has to be held the same amount of time, 5 continuous minutes. This is also when the rebel main army respawn flag will make it's first apperence which will be at the speedball field after A1 has been taken. If this objective is completed then the assault will proceed to- Battle Area A3 This is the final stage of the assault. The confederate forces have 45 minutes to complete as many stages of the assault as possible. The union forces have 45 minutes to prevent as many confederate victory areas as possible. ScoringThe confederate point value compounded with each area taken. If they take area A1 for the full 5 minutes 100 points permanent has been awarded. If they proceed to A2 and take that as well it is the second objective taken it is worth 200 points. A3 will be worth 300 points. Total points being 600 points if all three are held 5 continuous minutes apiece within the 45 minutes allotted for the assault. In short, all points awarded for areas held (within the same assault) in stages leading up to the current area being scored are re-added and applied to that areas initial score of 100. So if your total so far in the assault is 500 then the next stages battle areas are worth 600 apiece. The Union is awarded points in reverse order based on how many of the potential battle areas that could have been taken by the Rebels but were not taken. Specific Example: If the Rebels took the battle areas in Stages A1 and A2 and scored a total of 300 points by the end of the assault, then the union will be awarded 100 points for keeping the area in stage A3 out of confederate control. More confused that ever?

Skirmishes #1, #2, #3 are judged at 1:30, 2:00 and 2:30 respectively. Afterward there is a 30 minute lull in the scheduled action. This is given as a second wind to let union forces reload and preposition its forces in a defensive manner in anticipation of the next assault. Alternately the confederate forces should scout/harass/prep/plan for the coming assault on the union right.
Assault of the union right! 3:00 to 4:00 The confederate forces have the options of frontally attacking either or both B1 Devil's Den / B1 Peach Orchard. Each of these stage 1 battle areas will become active with flag stands at the same moment. They each are worth 100 points. If both are fully held at any time during the assault they will amount to a stage 1 total of 200 points. When at least one of the above areas are held for the 5 minutes needed the stage 2 area of B2 will become active with a flag stand placement. B2 itself is worth 200 to 300 points depending on how many stage 1 areas were held at the end of the assault. This assault has a stage 3 battle area that is already occupied however. It seems that the main union flag is planted at C3 and is being used as a respawn point for the federal troops. Confederate forces have to overrun the flag and hold their own battle flag their for 5 continuous minutes to gain the points for that area. Note that the rebels have a longer respawn line initially before they capture and hold a stage 1 area and are eligible to advance there main army flag and respawn closer to the action. The union starts close to the action but at the last stage area battle (B3) if the confederates overrun the flag it immediately cripples the union troops as tables are turned as they have a short amount of time to recapture the area and a longer respawn line to follow. Keep in mind either main army flag can be overran at any point causing its army's respawn line to lengthen back to its base.

An important issue to bring to light is 2 important factors that could effect the game point-wise for each army.
First is a bonus 4th stage that can occur in favor of the confederate forces. If they achieve all of their stage area objectives and still have at least 20 minutes of additional time left before the assault is closed then a 4th bonus stage is opened. I will contact both generals via radio and inform them of a new battle area that has become active. They will then become responsible of contacting and coordinating troops to move swiftly to the new objective. The southern forces with the intent to hold the area for 5 continuous minutes. The northern forces with the intent to foil the mission. Another situation that favors the union forces is the main army flag capture rule concerning points. The flag has to be returned, if captured, before the next assault. If it is held and then returned to the ref before the 30 minute lull which occurs before the next assault 100 points are deducted from the flags parent army and paid to the capturing army. The flag location can also be called in before the 30 minute lull, this method does not result in any point exchange. Note: anyone raiding a base cannot take the oppositions flags but can recapture there own flag. Additionally all flags must be kept in headquarters or on field during the game.

Bases are as follows: General Lee's Rebel HQ is the "Bunker Hill Base" and General Meade's Union HQ is "South Base" beside the village "Gettysburg".

Finishing the game format summery- The final set of Skirmishes, #4, #5 and #6 are judged in the same manner as the first set. One point I should note scoring wise is that this set in no way connects with the first set in compiling points. Example if your army scores skirmish #3 and then wins #4 at the start of the next set you do not count them as two in a row thus doubling #4's tally. Got that solider?
That being said we will wrap things up with a briefing of the final assault, Hancock's Charge! The first three battle areas (C1) consist of the Trostle house and the two adjacent road area above and below it. At least one of these areas have to be taken to open up the next area (C2) the Codori House. An hour is given for this assault. This assault differs from the others as the final area (C3) is in the Northern Head Quarters itself! If the base is overran it has to be held until I blow the whistle at 6:00 pm ending the game. At the point of confederate base occupation the Yankees will have immediate respawn capabilities at the speedball field and be able to try to retake there base before the 6pm deadline. I also want to add what may occur concerning the union main army flag during this time. It is normally against the rules to occupy a base for any lengthy period of time but because area (C3) is in the base the rebels are allowed differently. The rule about not taking flags out of bases is still in effect however. If the union flag is still entrapped inside the union base and rebels are still in control of the base at 6pm then an additional 100 points will be applied to the confederate score. And just in case you were wondering, no you can't advance the confederate flag inside the union base as a respawn point as this benefit is only given once a position has been successfully held. And as I said that isn't confirmed until 6pm. Any questions, monkey wrenches, bloody angles, curve balls any one want to throw at me?
