A House Divided: Chapter One
The groundwork into space for humankind was laid in the late 20th century when humans began to explore space, but it was not until the early 21st century that the technology necessary to usefully exploit it was developed. Interstellar exploration finally began with the development of Fusion power in 2020 after decades of research, leading to a relatively compact power source capable of providing a virtually limitless supply of energy. However, the ability to colonize other planets was not fully realized by the leading scientist of the time. The work of two obscure, disgraced physicists, in the end, proved to be far more valuable than all other advances in the 21st century. Thomas Kearny and Takayoshi Fuchida’s theories were disparaged during their lifetimes, but they allowed quick interstellar travel to become available in the early 2100s. By 2110, a scientific post had been established on New Earth, and in 2116 the first colonists landed there.
Within a mere hundred and fifty years, humanity had flung itself outward to occupy the area later known as the Inner Sphere – thousands of planets in a rough circle about a thousand light-years in radius, centered on Terra. Further outward growth would continue for hundreds of years more, but by this point the most substantial period of growth was over. During this period, there was a great deal of political strife. Terra had been unified under the Terran Alliance in 2086, but the Alliance found it was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain control over the outlying colonies, and after a long string of rebellions, the Alliance ended its attempts to rule all of humanity. The Liberal Party took control of the Alliance Parliament from the Expansionist Party and announced that it was withdrawing the Alliance to within sixty light-years (two jumps), granting outer colonies independence; whether they wanted it or not. Rapidly, innumerable small kingdoms formed, and almost as rapidly they merged or were conquered until only a handful remained. In 2314, Admiral James McKenna dissolved the Terran Alliance Parliament, which was on the verge of civil war, and established the Terran Hegemony under his leadership. McKenna then stated that his goal was to reunite all of humankind under the leadership of Terra once more. After McKenna’s death, hereditary possession of the Director-Generalship passed to the Cameron dynasty. In 2439, the Terran Hegemony found what they had all been looking for centuries – a true edge on the field of war. The Hegemony collapsed and split once again into multiple houses, each vying for control over the other, each waging war in an effort to reign supreme.
Operation Serpent
A newly formed alliance between many of the outer planets into what Is known as the Star League, has begun to establish itself throughout planetary system. In order to provide legitimacy to the New Star League, the council decided to launch an invasion against the Clans of the Inner Sphere and to utterly destroy one of them. They chose Clan Smoke Jaguar, largely because a defector gave them a path to the Jaguars’ capital world of Huntress.
SLDF (Star League Defense Force) units under the command of FedCom Marshal of the Armies Morgan Hasek-Davion moved in secret to the Smoke Jaguar capital of Huntress. He is accompanied by General Arkion Winston and the rest of Clan Wolf.
The Inner Sphere has just now learned of the attack, and, under the Command of Prince Victor, the Smoke Jaguars are preparing for the upcoming battle.
