    Traxxas Slash

    OK... Not paintball related, BUT...

I got my 9 year old "little dude" a 2wd Traxxas Slash for Christmas, and it's a BLAST. Amazingly fast, over any reasonable surface. Fun as hell to drive, and surprisingly tough! We have crashed it HARD, a few dozen times already, and it's working fine. Around $200 for the basic truck (ready to run), and another $60 for an average battery & charger, and let the fun begin! I bought a few extra batteries (these things get expensive, quick) for about $30-$35 each (depending on amperage) and a "smart charger" which keeps the batteries in the best possible shape. About $350 invested now, but the damn thing is so fun, that I want one for myself!

    TRAXXAS Slash (#5805) - Overview

The trucks & cars are so much better now, than what was available when I was a kid! 20 years ago, this truck would have cost about $1500 to build & run (poorly). Now, for about 1/5 of that price, you can get a well built truck/car with a ton of upgrade options, that will rip up the front yard if you are not carefull!!!

Just running the 7.2v 3000 mAh NiMH... I just "learned" of the existance of LiPo's this past weekend, and have not researched them enough (yet). At this point, I am very much a ROOKIE on the topic & just enjoying the smile of my little guy running the truck around the neighborhood.

Considering a truck/buggie for myself, but not sure how much I want to spend. I don't NEED any more hobies, but this one is FUN, accessible & not that expensive. A hobby for the front yard is a TREAT!

The LiPo's seem expensive, and I might need to upgrade speed controler AND motor first (or at the same time). I like the speed of the brushless motors, but is it wise to put a $150 motor in a $200 truck? Same for 2.4mH radio system, upgraded speed controler & LiPo power??? I might get a better platform to do some "serious" mods to, but for now, I am learning and enjoying!

Chappy??? We seem to like the same EXACT hardware!!! Is there a chance we were separated at birth??

if you want to stay cheap on buggy/truggy get a rtr= ready to run. That's the best way to go for byb. Now on lipos the only bad thing I can say about them is once they start to smoke look out it will burn down an rc in secs.

can tell you this hobby can get just as expensive as paintball. my truck cost 200 but did not come with radio, motors, speed controllers was just the truck i have upgraded the shocks and went to full metal gearing to handle the power of the brushless motors and when you do you upgrade the speed controller as well. and make sure you get one that can handle lipos if you do go that way.

First upgrade was the Big Bore Alum shock kit. Running 30 wt up front, and 50- wt in the rear. I have been playing with spacers a bit, and I think I have the right combo for my front yard / driveway antics!!!

I have a park right next to my house, and I chase the neighbors kids all over the place with the car. The kids love it, it's fun for me, and my neighbor loves it, because the kids are so tired, that they sleep better. Every now and then, I'll screw up and get too close... Bad things happen: the car gets stepped on, the car gets kicked, or the kids trip. All are fun, but I don't want to hurt the car. The kids can be replaced (hehhe).

Next step??? 2.4 Ghz radio or a brushless motor & speed controller? In quest of knowledge here.... What should my next upgrade be? More power, or a smoother RC unit with the ability to run multiple cars???
